Default Running on three?

Got an 06 STI, full service history and 65000 miles.
Between 2500 and 3000 rpm the car seems to run on three cyliders and then onto four, with associated boost (immediate) in power.
Seems to run OK on full power.
The exhaust has gone black, which seems to confirm that it may well be running on three cylinders.
Question is, would running on three be likely to raise a fault code, as I haven't got one coming up.
Any likely causes that anyone can think of?
