I think your car is a MY96 car as they never made any STI's in 1995 so that would make it a version 2 (no such thing as a version 1 either as they didnt know if they were going to produce any more, hence 2 years between models )
For definate, the early cars (92-94) were mainly all cdb, on a 96 it may not be

Fire up the applied model code to be 100 %.
The plate on the passengers front strut.
On the cdb there is meant to be a cross hatch marking down beside the alternator. But the only way to be a 100% is to take of the heads.
I remember reading over on the yank scooby site about a bloke didnt have any markings on the block but he still had a cdb.

What Tony has said is slightly incorrect. In 1995 the WRX RA Sti version was built but i doubt your car is one of those.
In Subaru terms your car will be a MY96, but from September 1995 the Sti Ver 2 was built so your car may have been built in 95 but its still a MY96 if that makes sense?
Another thing to consider if no evidence of the build month is produced when registering an import with DVLA they simply put it to the 01 Jan of the year it was built.
Closed deck blocks have various markings
The EJ20G variant has the hatching under the alternator and the ribs on the rear right corner above where the starter would sit.
The EJ22T (Legacy) has the ribs but no hatching as its Cast differently.
The 22B engine has the ribs but not hatching and again is cast differently to the other 2.
It is highly unlikely you have one on a version 2 Sti. To save splitting the engine to find out a point to note is all CDB,s have the ribbing on the rear right corner.
I have a 2.0 CDB and a 2.2CDB in the garage if you want pics for the iD marks.

thanks for your posts guys iv had a look at the seat belt tag (thanks KLR16V) and it says 10/95 so its def a 1995 car so im assuming like 71/200 said it will be a my 96 , just looked at engine code on vin plate and the first 5 digets are EJ20G which reading 71/200 post it is a cdb but ther is def no hatching marks so confusing

I have checked this with Subaru and they said it is a STI made for 1996 but due to it been sold late in the year of 1995 and registered in that year i should just call it a '95. Besides try selling a 96 car registered in 95 to the common man and he will tell you its a 95.
