Default Thought I had blown my Engine

Was on my way to the little meet at Thurock tonight - bit of spirited driving on the way - came off a dual carriageway, over a roundabout in 2nd normal speed and felt like clutch was slipping with revs but not moving

Suddenly the revs dropped and it run like a wobbly bag of spanners

Pulled over and the whole car was wobbling. No knocking or banging just REALLY lumpy. Its backfiring quite a bit. Ive unplugged the two coil packs on the turbo side and the idle hasn't changed, so it mis-firing BADLY. Only running on two.

Why would it just suddenly drop 2 cylinders

What would it likely to be? Spark plugs/coil packs or someting else?

Any suggestions/help appreciated guys

Tucker

Been out there this morning. The Coil packs on the offending pots are fine, as are the plugs.

Next step is a compression test I suppose....

Needless to say I am sh*ting myself. Anybody with any ideas?

Check oil, what's it like? Drive gently to a subaru specialist...or trailer it if possible. Just not worth doing any extra damage if it's dying.

yea get a comp test done - if its bad news then its a strip down regardless of what it is to find the problem. hopefully its "just" a headgasket if it is low compression

Have you checked it though? Still decent level? Good colour?

Would a headgasket cause it mis-fire that badly tho? HG was done last year along with New heads, timing set complete - all new sensors and gaskets etc...

Will have to get it to someone and comp test it

Well if anyting its a little full!?

It looks a little bit dark too...

What would too much oil do? too much pressure and blow the HG I guess?

you can buy a compression tester from halfrauds for about 20-30 quid i think, you might as well get that and DIY at least you'll have a new tool at the end of the day.

i wouldn't think it was a HG problem myself but to drop 2 cylinders at the same time is quite a challenge! You have to ask yourself the question, what could you break to make is miss on both cylinders on the same side of the engine!?

how about one of the cam sprockets jumping a couple of teeth? if the timings out you would definatly get this. did the tensioner get swapped at the time of the HG being done?

REALLY?

I did clean my air filter yesterday!

Maybe its screwed with the MAF. As Hudson asked, was it on both cylinders on the same side?

My mates got one so I think he's going to have a look...

Im now thinking its got too much oil with too much pressure and blown the gasket as its too much of a coincedence for both to drop on the same side!!

Not too sure about the cam pulleys skipping or breaking a few teeth... I could open the cover to see if a few have snapped. The tensioner was the original but the rest was new..

No mate - its just dumping the fuel and backfiring - the Mrs nearly got charred with a few flames

I turned it over to check the spark and it sounds like a tractor - popping on the 2 pots so it sounds like theres compression there

Compression Test it to check the health of the engine first mate but seems a coincidence that it occured after cleaning the air filter though.
Might even be a broken camshaft on one side - has been known.

Going to get it done in the next few days

A broken camshaft could be a contender - that would explain it... Tommy_Turbo snapped a shaft a little while ago. He bought my spare head!!

Car ran like a bag of bolts backfiring through the induction and exhaust, would hardly rev and nearly done my head in. Changed sensors, coilpacks etc to no avail. Actually had to tow it to start it when cold. Changed airflow meter and sweet as a nut again.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if it was mis-firing on any cylinders?

Right - tested cylinders 1 & 3. If im right in thinking I should have 140 - 170 psi on each pot, I've got half of what I should have

Reading about 70-80 on both cylinders, so its an engine out and strip down to determine the cause/problem!

Not sure when Im going to have the time to get it out and stripped down - moving house end of the week Will update this thread when i know more!

Thanks for all your help so far guys

Sorry to hear that bud. Compression does seem damningly low.

Good luck getting it sorted!

just as a maybe, my motorbike registered 100 psi compression,so i replaced the rings, re-did the test, still 100 psi, should be 200,yet the bike rides and performs as it should.

so dont condemn it jsut yet but not saying it isnt.

did you perform the test with all the plugs out etc ?

Did the test with both plugs out and with the throttle open too. Not tested cylinders 2 & 4 but i think I will do before it comes out.

I needed to do a new clutch, fit de-cat downpipe and also wanted to paint LOTS of bits like the inlet manifold - so will take my time in my new shed once we've moved in! Just need to get my workbench sorted and get the car to my garage in the meantime...
