Default Do clutches die without warning?

Good Afternoon

Got in my car today ready to take it for an MOT, Started it up, let it warm up, tried to engage reverse and got a horrible crunch.

Tried once more, same thing, tried to engage 1,2,3 and it will not engage.

Turned teh car off, goes into gear fine, put it into reverse, depressed the clutch and tried to start the car and jumped back.

Question is last weekend I turned the car round, drove fine, reverse, 1 and 2, parked it up and left it for 7 days, no noises no smells when I used it.

Has my clutch just died all by itself? Or should I be thinking of something else??

Cheers People

Ash

Sounds like the clutch is doing it's job, but is not disengaging.

turn the car off and stick it in 1st, start the car with the clutch pressed down. if you start moving you know its the clutch. if it doesnt then it will probably be the box. check the oil.

theres no way that your clutch would go to that extent, it would be slipping its **** of prior to it.

Seeing the clutch is made of a number of components; failure can be instant without warning, or it can give warning and slip. Depending on which part that breaks, and how it breaks.

Worth checking out the hydraulics first though (master or slave cylinder).

I would certainly check slave first infact if you can get someone into the inside of the car and get them to depress the clutch on and off.

You could check the slave movement and ensure it's moving, you will have to remove IC (if its TMIC) to see slave movement though.

After that it's strip the clutch out and find out whats happened, there is actually a rubber boot around the clutch fork on gearbox you may be able to use a torch to try and see what's happening, its not easy to see whats happening through this lil hole though you could use a mechanics extending mirror if you have one.

Cheers for your reply.

I have tried starting the car in gear, and the car jumps.

I will get someone to have a look at the cylinders or I guess its another clutch, just seems strange that it could fail with no signs whatsoever last time I used it.

Thanks people

The clutch is fine its the release mechanism that is at at fault as its not releasing, so the master and slave cylinders, also check the fluid level in the reservoir.

Had similar happen on my Focus runabout recently. Symptoms the same. Couple of the centre springs in the driven plate had broken up and fallen into the gap between the driven and cover plates causing odd drag symptoms and some noise. Cost me a new clutch.
