Am I paranoid about my MAF?
My MY99 Type-R has an idling problem to a degree where it cuts out. The fuel consumption seems to be ok (approx 20mpg). The car itself seems to run perfectly, has not missed a beat since I've owned it. My question is if the MAF sensor has gone would it not manifest itself as a badly running car? Most of the MAF related problems seem to relate to uneven idling, no one mentions wheather the car itself runs ok or not. If my car runs ok, can I then discount that the MAF sensor is duff? I have also removed and cleaned the Lambda sensor. I am also trying to locate (with no luck) the idle valve. The air intake system is also totally standard. Can anyone tell me if you can find out using a multimeter if your MAF sensor has expired!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Craig.

Craig,
MAF failures come in all shapes and sizes. Also before failing and registering an error code 23 to the ECU there is/could be a big period that the MAF works suboptimally and creating problems.
1. You could have uneven idling and no change in consumption as you and I had.
2. You could have normal idling but very high consumption.
3. You could have both.
A number of people at Subaru Greece claim that the MAF may be operating in three ranges (idle, mid, high flow ranges) and when the MAF is near its life the problems may start from any of the three.
If you have narrowed down the problem to the MAF you could try cleaning it (I don't know if you have thin film or not). If you have the thin film type be EXTREMELY careful and delicate with your moves. Use electric contact cleaner and perhaps a cotton bud at your own risk. If you have to change it you might as well give it a try.
In terms of voltages you could find the right pin in your ECU and measure it or alternatively use the Select Monitor. I am not sure if my voltage will help you because we have different cars. I think the best way to go is changing your MAF with a friend's and see how things go.
Dimitris.
