Default Oil Coolers - When are they needed?

My mate went down to Scooby Clinic on Friday so Pat could fit and map his new Solaris ECU.

I think his most powerful map is around 407bhp and 380torque.

He was recommended though to get an aftermarket oil cooler. Not sure if they meant top mount or not (as he does have a FMIC), but I didn't think this was necessary at this power level?

Or does he need one really? As if so, I will need to look at getting one as well......

Cheers

What was the reason behind the recommendation? Does he track the car, I have seen and run a car with more power than this on the road with no need for an oil cooler.

I havent directly spoke to him, only texts due to work. But I said I doubt we do, but he said Pat and other guys at Scooby Clinic said he did....

No, he doesn't track the car ever. He has defi gauges, so all I can think is the temps rose on there? Could this be due to using crap/wrong type oil?

I'll text him now and ask the main reason.....

Could have been due to running the car on the dyno, had an interesting conversation with Chy on the weekend regarding oil and from his findings motul 300v 15w50 is very good oil.

Mine hasn't been on track since the re-map, but I've never seen my oil temperature reach 100 degrees on the road.
However I have fitted a Hyperflow thermostatic TMOC system, and this replaces the modine, I have noticed that my oil temp rises quicker from a cold start now (good thing !)
My hot idle oil pressure is up by 0.25 bar as well, due to a 78 degree "normal" temperature as opposed to the 88 degree previously.

P.S. Tranny cooler mod going on next to cope with 400 bhp....

I've text my mate, but he lives in the sticks where they have just got electricity and water, so phone signals are quite scares, lol.

Why did you fit one Dunx? Recommended, or because it was a good deal on here?

That's close enough for me ! I'd worry at 115 and back off if it went any further.

Mine was fitted as part of my "engineering project" to have all the supporting mods in and ready for the next stage.... a fully forged bottom end, when the piggybank gets a kicking.

Lucky unused 2nd hand deal on here, YES !

Do your temps not get high Midlife if you don't need the oil cooler?

I went in his car this aft, and it warmed up nicely, and he literally booted it for no more than a minute, and the temps were over 100!! I was real surprised how fast they rose.

Guess he maybe need an oil cooler then?

Chris

My oil temps ramp up pretty quick when on the move but generally stay below 100 ..It depends on where the oil temp sensor is located but that seems pretty hot to me

What oil are you using ??

Cheers

I'm not too sure. He got it serviced at Scooby Clinic, so they used what ever they use.....

He did say though his idle temps are are the same. The lads a Scooby Clinic and Pat said his rise in temps were due to his new turbo etc?!

I think his sensor is on top of the block. Thats the normal position isnt it?

Hi Dunx, you say your oil gets up to temp quicker with the TMOC, how much quicker? I'd really like to achieve this on mine, as i do the odd short journey to work, and would be much happier with quicker warm up.

Thanks,Mit
