Default Air/Fuel Gauge

Can you get a Defi Air Fuel ratio gauge? The gauge's are the ones which are black when the car is off, then red when running....

PS I've got a 60mm Defi guage in the garage....oil temp brand new if interested. I bought it then decided to use the one on the SECS as I couldn't find a newage 60mm a-pillar tripple pod

Hi,
It's actually for my friend who isn't on here, so I have to relay stuff to him.

He has the 3 centre pod with Oil Temp, Pressure and Boost. but has been recommended to get a Air/Fuel Gauge as well now.

Is a Knock Sensor the same as a Air/Fuel Gauge?

Thanks

(PS Glad you like the Camera )

Hi

I'm not sure why someone has suggested an AFR guage.......

what this does is look at the exhaust gasses after they have left the engine and work out what fuel has been put in for the air that has entered the cylinders. For maximum efficiency the ratio is 14.7 air for 1 of fuel AFAIK

It's not that simple as fuel is injected into the cylinders for cooling as well ....... a real black art ...like druids meeting at stonehenge LOL

A knock sensor is something entirely different ...

Knock / Detonation (pinking) happens when the fuel and air mixture ignites before the ECU wants it to happen and the gasses explode above the piston causing damage which eventually wrecks the engine Turbo engines are prone to to this as they force air and fuel into the cylinders for extra power

A Knock sensor is simply a microphone which listens to the engine looking out for possible explosions in the cylinders and takes action to stop the engine destroying itself.

In the case of the Subaru Newage, the ECU is pretty good at detecting det and will sort it out, it's bit more of an issue with the older classics, particularly imports where they are used to higher octane fuel ......

HTH

Thanks, that actually explained a lot I've been wondering about for ages!

I know a local bloke who has a very powerful Evo, and does the work on quite a few of our cars recommended us get a Air/Fuel Gauge. Not sure the real reason though, but my friend is wanting one now from his recommendation.....

Chris

I've looked at getting an EVO a few times but the service intervals make my nose bleed LOL

Your EVO guy might shoot me down here but AFAIK the EVO Boost control and ECU management as they left the factory isn't brilliant.

The Scooby crew usually tinker with the very good Factory ECU (EcuTeK etc) whilst the EVO mob usually ditch their ECU for something better like an Autronics !

From a tuning point of view Scoobies and EVO's are a bit like chalk and cheese LOL

Does this help ??

IMO a 'simple' narrow band afr is useless to have.
What your friend could have use for is a wideband lambda gauge. I'm pretty sure Defi doesn't make those.
They don't make knock sensors either. Knocklink is ugly but it's possible to remove the inside from the box and install it somewhere with only the LEDs visible (inside the 3-gauge pod for example)

Yeah, that helps a lot cheers

He has just had a Solaris ECU fitted, and I'm sure he got a wideband lambda sensor fitted with that.

lol, it certainly is!

He bought all the bit as well, like Multi Map Calibration Switch, Bosch Wide Band Sensor, & Controller Loom etc. Has launch control, anti-lag which you'd expect. Has 7 different maps as well which it quite a few!!
