Default Rollcages anyone???

Is anyone using a rollcage in their subaru?
Im thinking of putting a cage in my 2002 bug as i paln to do lots of track days but dont want to put one in just for show. only want to fit one that will actually work. Didnt want to go to the trouble of a weld in one just a bolt in.
Besides more weight, no passengers and bumping your head, are there any other downfalls. the car will also be used on the road.
Any recomendations????

good question. id like to know the same. How much weight is a roll cage? i dont wanna strip the car but i think the safety is needed when im on the track. Are the bolt in ones easy to remove/refit for track days?

You could go for a rear cage, not so much bumping of heads....

P.S. You are taking this get-away driver thing TOO seriously !

Im planning an "ITALIAN JOB"
IM recruiting....How do you look in a balaclava?

But seriously, would prefer a full cage as It seems like people only have rear cages for show.
There was a news story in our local paper the other day about people getting crushed when a subaru crashed and rolled. Just got me thinking. plus i bought the car to do track days so seems like a sensible thing to do.

my recent excursion into the wall at donny has sent me on a safety kick. was only passenger, but in a car without a cage, so lucky we didnt roll! Side impact bars did their job. My head did hit the A pillar which im sure would be worse if their was a cage...Harness before next too.

I had a roll cage in my classic as i was doing some track days, found it gave the car a very hard ride on the road as the cage stiffened the shell, even if you go for a bolt in cage there will still be some welding required for the foot plates,
In a small accident on the road with a roll cage you find it more harmfull as your head would be bashing a nice solid piece of metal instead of soft trim,

The saftey devices one is designed so you can remove the from half when using on the road so its not a dangerous.

I would definately wear a helmet on a track day, with or without a cage. I race motorbikes and know how essential they are. might even be tempted to keep it in the car all the time in case im ever in the mood to go silly.
I see so many people on here telling us how much BHP/torque their car has but besides big brakes you dont hear any mention of saftey devices.
When you race on a track you have to have certain saftey equipment fitted and a track is the safest place to drive fast. But when you drive on a road with oncoming traffic and walls, lamp posts, cars, people to hit you only have to wear a seatbelt. I think i would rather crash into a load of old tyres than an oncoming truck.

It was the first outing for my new helmet lol!

Yes i too would prefer tyres. I found i moved out of the seat to much, 4 point min harnesses.

So can you get a "removable" roll cage? Which is actually worth it and not just for show?

That seems like the way to go. Or maybe use the rollcage padding that they sell. I saw a photo of a cusco cage in a bugeye before and it looked like you would always be banging your knee when you get in and out.
Was yours a weld in or bolt in cage??

Having a car with a roll cage in it is a novelty to start off with but when trying to get in and out of the car in tesco's car park you'll soon get cheesed off with it,
Only bolt in cage's will have a removable front section, Mine was bolt in made by safety devices think the model was Q10,

I dont see how a Cusco cage is going to help in a roll over as it dodges the dash and that would put a weak point to bend, So I'd say that oe is more for show

ive got a classic v4 sti

it is not a daily driver, but i do still use it for the odd trip to work etc

Not really after something which will survive an impact with a tree. Not doing any rallys. Just something to stop the roof crushing me should i roll it in the gravel or grass..

Safest car in the world at the moment.

Part of the reason I bought a classic was becaise I was told it was very difficult to get a bolt in cage for a newage.

My classic is getting the mounting points welded in tomorrow, and its a 6 point safety devices cage.

Im also going to have to get a box section welded in for the side mount seats to sit on by the look of it! worth know if you are sending the car off for welding.

second hand classic safty devices roll cage on ebay as we speak, anyone got a newage one for me?
Saw something funny in a car tuning mag the other week. some young lad had customized his golf gti and he had a roll cage in his car made out of cardboard tubes.
Ideal for keeping the weight down.
If evrery one could save me their empty toilet rolls i would be very greatfull.

i have been told that scoobyclinic do the removable half cages for the newage.

not too expensive either i seem to remember.

Also, Cusco cages i am led to beleive are fairly 'show', but the Safety 21 cages they do are the same design, but beefier tubing, so actually provide protection.

I wouldnt mind a cage for track work and Ring trips, but having had cars before with multipoint weld in cages etc, i know how much of a ball ache they are!

I'm far better looking in a balaclava on backwards !

To crush a new-age you really have to be doing it VERY wrong, I had a write up from the USA on how hard it was to "chop" people out of wrecked Scoobs.... There are 6-8 layers of steel in the A-pillars. Will have a troll around to try and find it later.

And as for the "I'd rather hit some old tyres than a HGV...." that's why "grown-ups" save the silly stuff for the circuits. Colleague of mine suggested a plumbing insulation "roll cage" to out-psyche the opposition.

dunx

P.S. I could live with a rear cage, I could tie the dogs leads to it

I stripped the interior, and put the cage in loose, but getting the mounting plates properly welded in to MSA standards.

To be honest, you can strip the car yourself, so if you know a good welder, should save some money.

Do be aware that the sill where it needs welding is where the brakes run one side, and fuel the other................. its a mare.

Its a bit of a job- mine is in and seats installed- cage just touches the dash and rear doors, and have had to move one fog switch to another blank spot, but all in. I am running a full interior for the moment, as haven't got a fire system in, but I would say that most of the interior is very light, bar the front seats
