Question which turbo i got on my v7 JDM WRX STI?

Hi peeps, i'm not sure what the full name it is? all i can see is IHI so which VF turbo does that make? is it VF30? my car made 345bhp on the rollers with some mods on a standard JDM ecu with this turbo. I am v happy with the result just curious what it is.. as i read there are 2 different turbos on the bugeye models - mine is a 51 plate.. not sure that helps.

cheers
Tim

Don't the early New Age STi's have a VF35 as OEM fitment?

Thumbs up

Yeah, 99% certain it has a VF35.

And yes, 340bhp is roughly the ball park... or 340-350 if 'lucky' - as you have been!

cheers Joz so the VF35 is better then the VF30? as i read the ball mark for the VF30 is 330bhp max. Do you know if the VF35 is a rollerbearing?

Yeah, VF35/34 better option than VF30.

VF34, I think, is the roller bearing version of the VF35. VF35 has a conventional 'coin'-like 360deg thrust bearing, suspending the shaft.

If memory servevs, the VF35 has a bit better top end; VF34 has a bit better spool... or it may be vice versa lol.

I think roller bearings spool better (and/or have better top end)... but I think they may be more fragile than a conventional thrust bearing.

Or, it could be vice versa again!

A VF30 is the same turbo as the VF34 apart from its not a rollerbearing.

The VF35 has a smaller exhaust housing so will not make as much topend as the 34 or the 30 but will out spool both all things being equal.

So basically on my bugeye i have a VF30 & the claims of 330ish max bhp is bullcrap as mine hit 345bhp & there abouts with lbs of torque too!

still i'm curious about this i found on ScoobyWorld - maybe my car has this IHI turbo? Turbos : Subaru Impreza Turbo IHI VF-34
or just read here...
IHI turbocharger Suitable for: Subaru Impreza STI 2.0L The IHI VF-34 Turbo is found on the limited production Subaru v7 WRX STI-RA (GDB). This turbo is differentiated from the VF30 through it's more advanced bearing design. The bearing design allows for much quicker turbo spool-up (depending on tuning, 300-500+ RPMs over the VF30), while retaining the power capabilities of the VF30. The VF34 is capable of 350+ HP (~300+whp) This turbo is a direct bolt-on for all GC8, GDA, GDB EJ20 turbo engines. This is an excellent replacement turbo for those looking for substantial power gains while maintaining streetability.

No, not bullcrap.

As with all car tuning, sometimes you get better than expected figures; other times not so lucky. To compound this, the turbo'd EJ engines can be especially fickle in this regard.

The VF34 is basically a roller-bearing equivalent of the VF35. The VF35 - if I'm correct this time lol - was fitted to the Blobeye 2003 STi's (I think).

What he said.

In practice there is usually little difference between the two, but as Sherman says, the 35 usually spools slightly better and the 34 usually makes a little more power. Both very good turbos. 35 can usually be had significantly cheaper which is the clincher for most. Only downside is that is can be a bit surge prone.

Indeed, if you're getting 345!!! out of the quick-spooling VF30, then keep it!

Only if you want to go further, then consider a different turbo.

I have a STI7 JDM and mine was safely running 333bhp with similar torque recently on the rollers with a vf30 (which came as standard). Mods are decat and re-map. JGM said these were good figures for the spec and the car made nice smooth curves on the graph. 345bhp is a very good result on that turbo.
