Mapping an STi V7
I've had a couple of Impreza's now, both remapped and both needed clutches within a few weeks.
I now have a JDM STi version 7 which feels quick but as my old car (51 plate WRX) was running a VF30 and 550's and had been mapped, it was running 330bhp.
The WRX was a lot better on fuel. As they are running the same injectors, could this be down to the mapping?
Also, I want to get the STi mapped but is it possible to have the boost brought in gradually instead of one big hit as this will be kinder on the clutch?

Fuel economy would be improved with a remap yes..
the JDM sti map is fairly dirty with regards to fuel useage and emissions.. :naughty:
if the clutch is worn a fair bit it will go only slightly sooner after power increase.. it would have gone anyway.. but yes if you had it mapped with you driving you could specify however you want the power delivery.. it is possible to reduced the boost low down and therefore the torque which is the main reason the clutch would give in.

I have noticed it really stinks of fuel on tickover and on a high speed run to 140 for a couple of seconds, it burned just under 1/4 tank!!
Both my other Imprezas at high mileage, 80k and 100k. But the STi has 40k on it.
I'm planning on a 20g for it and hoping for around 380bhp with supporting mods.

not got a dump to atmophere DV fitted? often open on idle and part throttle..
would expect it to smell of fuel... other option is a sensor failed like lambda.
they go very nice with 20g fitted.

Standard dump valve fitted. I'll get the sensors checked when the timing belt is being done.
Is it possible to have the boost progressively increased with the revs to preserve the clutch life or will it die anyway, therefore might as well have it all in one go and enjoy it

yes it can be mapped to have the boost progressively come in but better to have it all in one go
should be able to use a twin boost map and run progressive boost on one and all at once on the other so you can choose

Hi Weeebell,
I had my V7 STI Type UK at 340 bhp for around eighteen months, up to fitting a larger turbo the clutch managed fine, it took a huge increase in torque to 360 ft.lb. to finally finish it off... I'd budget for an up-graded replacement !
IMHO
dunx
P.S. JGM did mine and it's properly quick, but I can manage 28 mpg if I'm careful.

I was told it will manage up to 400 bhp if you don't slip it... when removed it wasn't worn out, just over whelmed, mine started slipping once the MD turbo went on and things got serious !
Delayed Simon working his magic, as I had to get something capable of handling 350 + ft.lb.

I've got an STI V7 that has the TSL 333 kit on it, it only makes 330bhp but I'm sure ICan forgive them!
the car is fine on fuel, I get between 260 and 300 miles to a tank and that's a total mixture of driving, quick, slow, traffic... NO traffic

Also with regards to fuel useage the JDM maps are very dirty and turn the lambda sensor off at 3100rpm in most of them.. hence they have no fine correction from the lambda sensor above that rpm and like to drink.. heavily
