Default This Sounds Expensive

I just took my 93 WRX out for a fast drive to a mates, when started it up to return home there was ahorrible clunking....

Drove home anyway listening. very metallic clunking, not rev dependent. car drives fine.

first thought was the turbo (cooked bearings) but it clunks at idle ??????

any ideas?

or anyone know a subaru mechanic in NW London?

please help this car is costing me a fortune.

thx

Sounds like you've broken your crank shaft.
If it is the crank then it will have popped at least 1 piston too.
Hopefully im wrong though

Will need a replacement bottom end if so.
Could be a good excuse to go 2.5??

When you say "use the engine to slow down" you mean down shifting right ??
or do you mean you are off power & coasting when slowing down ??

pretty certain its not the crank.

just started her up and she idles and revs fine but a distinct rattle.

sounds like its coming from under the intercooler. at idle its every couple of seconds. on rev it increases then continues for a second after coming off the gas (ie its not from the crank or cams)

praying now

The bell housing is underneath the ic so could be something broken or on its way out in the clutch / release assembly

disconnected igntion and spun the engine on starter - no noise. so i guess its not big ends or pistons.

driving noise speeds up when you come off the gas!??? like its waste turbo gasses?

Is the noise still there when you dip the clutch - if it goes when clutch is down, possibly the gearbox.

thx merlin, no clutch make no difference.

to be clear it sounds like a stone ratlling around somewhere, it has now dissappeared at idle. Still there on gas and increases when off gas (moving)

As above - turbo heat shield loose or up-pipe heat shields corroded/broken weld.

my heat sheild/s are loose and the sound could be described as a stone bouncing around a tin box. It is worst at idle or very low RPM and usually goes away above 1,500RPM or so. Sounds like that's hopefully what it is!
