Default 95 WRX

Hi All

Just after a bit of advise really i'm looking to upgrade to a slightly bigger turbo than the stock TD05 and maybe better spool up times. Any ideas what options i have without spending a small fortune i.e a later model turbo's or are they different fitments than a 95 model

any comments welcomed

thanks

new turbo means new ecu or at least a new map, are you running stainless headers as these dont do turbo spool any favours if you are below a certain power level.

Mine takes a while to come in. Would be nice to have a faster spool as mine has no power at all off of boost

Maybe a modified TD05 (18G for example) is the way to go...? What sort of RPMs are you seeing full boost at the moment? If it's much later than 3k RPM maybe there is another issue that needs resolving first. Like fastboyslim says, the standard TD05 spools up pretty quick (I have the same car, MY95 WRX).

Yeah I was thinking 18g poss . No stainless headers just stock ecu, full decat 3inch,hks mushroom, pretty standard just looking for something that gives better boost as I'm thinking of fitting an apexi and avcr in the next few months

It's a tough one, and without "proper" tuning experience I can only echo what I've heard on these forums.
With a PFC you'll probably get a better response from the turbo and be able to hold higher boost from your TD05. Having said that, a PFC with a bigger turbo will be even better.. Personally, I'd go for the Apexi first and get it mapped to the TD05. The reason that I say that is that with a bigger turbo and a remap you'll be getting close to the limits of the bottom end.
You really need to decide a budget then speak to one of the respected tuners on here to see what's possible.

I have hks headers and up pipe which lost me 9ftlbs. Its a 3" up pipe i think, could this cause it to spool up slower. It comes in around 3200 and really kicks as im running 1.2Bar.
Just takes so long to get to it when you put you foot down. Wish it was more responsive off boost

you've hit the nail on the head a standard up pipe is 42mm iirc so a 3" one will absolutly kill spool and give as you said earlier no power off boost.

i have a 94 wrx & find as you say the spool up quite slow & not hitting peak boost till about 5000rpm but i fitted a polar chip & seems to come in slightly sooner now so maybe worth seeing how it feels after a remap mate these turbos are good for 340bhp & car will be on its limits anyway, a andy forest modified tdo4 or tdo5 turbo look good for earlier boost

thanks for the advise everyone ill take it all on board and maybe fit the apexi first and see what a remap does maybe look to change my up pipe to a smaller diametre to.

Got the PFC to and didnt change spool up just peak pressure.

What up pipe and headers are going to be the best for helping spool up and off boost power.
Would i gain anything fitting an equal length manifold. Dont no what the up and down sides of fitting either are.
