Default 2002 bug eye scooby advice

Hello chaps,

I am after some general advice regarding a 2002 bug eye STI, I took my freind who owns the car down to The Racing Line for a remap. Current mods were:

FMIC
INDUCTION
FUEL PUMP
BOOST CONTROLLER
ECUTEK REMAP
UPRATED PLUGS
UPRATED OIL COOLER

The car if I remember correctly left with circa 350/350 and felt amazing compared to the drive up... From what Matt@TRL said it seemed the turbo would be out of its efficency if we pushed further. The car feels good but as ever the bug for more power has set in.

I am trying to think of a decent spec for my mate until he forges next year, We just want the torque up a bit to around 380lbs. My thoughts are:

18G TDO5H TURBO UPGRADE
UNEQUAL LENGTH AFTERMARKET HEADERS (KEEP THE BURBLE)
UPRATED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR

What can the standard internals safely handle and would it be a better idea to go for a 20g so when he forges he does not need another turbo swop??

I would appreciate any factual good advice anyone can offer... TRL have
offered their advice and the above is what we agreed... but I thought we would get some more advice as it all helps.

Kind regards,
GUM

i have been informed by several sources that the 02 sti engine is good for 450 max, but i did hear that TSL (i think) ran one at just over that for several months and it was fine when they stripped it to forge.
i also have an 02 sti with a very similar spec at the momenmt but really want to go for 430bhp,

looking at getting an MD321T Unequel headers 650cc injectors and also a pressure reg, not sure if that will get me up to the figure or if i will need some other stuff,

the turbo your taklk about will not take you over 400bhp, it will raise your torque fig but not sure on what sort of numbers you will be getting

sorry its not a full reply to all your questions but im still learning myself, im the sort of person that wont do things twice so get as much info as i can then decide on the best course of action, anyay hope this helps

Hello mate,

Your reply is much appreciate... with regards to the stock internals limits i must admit i am a bit suprised.. 450 However pleasantly surprised

So with that in mind I am thinking maybe a 20g unit rather than an 18g, any views on which one???? If we see 370/380 we will be more than happy... then with the addition of injectors we may push a bit more later.

Kind regards,
GUM

So are these bottom ends really good for 450? The 20g has been ordered now just need injectors then its time to go for 400 instead.

Anyone can reccomend direct replacement injectors (650cc) at a good price?

Kind regards,
GUM

Hey mate,

I would have thought that if its the VF35 still it will max out at 370bhp. The VF35 is a very good turbo but will not make 400 dude.
I had my VF35 running at 1.45bar but in the cold weather recently hit 1.55bar. I've also see a couple of people say they had theres at 1.6bar???

This is was my spec is on my 2002 STi.

Made 402.5bhp - 359lbft following my map with Simon at SRR Tuesday.

OEM TMIC
MD321T
Forge recirc DV (RED spring and shim)
Fuelab regulator
Walbro 255 fuel pump.
RCM Team Ice 3" with Sports Cat exhaust system.
Lateral 3 bolt headers and up-pipe
Hyperflow cold air feed
V-Power with 100mls of NF
550 (Pinks) injectors

My results are 402.5bhp - 359lbft @ 1.6bar.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the reply, the car was run at 1.4 bar and was actually 360/355... inlet temps were high due to positioning of induction so we knew there was a few things to sort out. We like the vf35 but defo want more scope so a 20g has been decided. Your figures seem awesome and I did consider that turbo but the price made it a no go. I was unaware that 400 was a safe limit on standard engine hence why i said we wouldnt push to far. But now 400 is the goal... is yours stock block???

I will let you guys know the results in 2 weeks

also what cc are the standard sti injectors?

Kind regards,
GUM

Hey matey,

360/355 IS GOOD!! I miss the earlier boost on the VF35 but cannot fault the MD321 break hell loose boosting.

Hence why I went for a CAIK rather than engine bay induction kit to keep tempts down mate.

Yes standard block 2.ot block with just over 51k. I'm pretty **** about warming up and cooling down hence why the VF25 that came out had sod all play in it and now cracks!!!

20g will be an awsome turbo mate.

If they are pink mate they will be the 550cc injectors.

Steve

Thanks for the info dude... it was getting a bit lonely on this thread What is CAIK though?? Inlet temps seem to be a problem but the way the fmic pipes are routed it stops us relocating inside the wing... so we are thinking of other options.

Kind regards,
GUM

P.S just checked the dyno sheets was actually 355/348lbs... sorry for the wrong info.
