Low gearbox oil- help

Low gearbox oil- help
I recently bought a P1 at the end of last year, not long after i had to change the clutch, i think this was the original clutch. I've recently added a set of guages on aswell and had a leak which i've rectified now(i'm sure it's the engine oil right?).
However, recently done a check of the fluids and realised the gearbox fluid is very low, Could this be from the clutch replacement or could this oil be from the guages set up?
I have another car to drive so it's on the drive for now but looking up for good gearbox oil, it's nearly £50 to fill up so i wouldn't want to just put some in and check for a leak in the slight case it rushes all out. Sorry i'm not very technically minded to say the least so any helpful thoughts would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Changing gauges wouldnt affect gearbox oil levels. mine was on 49k and was LOW on gearbox oil, hard to get into gear and ground a lot. Topped it up = perfect
Just top it up and see? trans fluid isnt that expensive, and you dont fill a gearbox up like an engine, that can do more harm then good!

Thanks for the reply.
I presumed that the guages wouldnt of effected it but just wanted to double check. Which gearbox oil would you recommend? I remember seeing they were about £15 for a litre and needed several litres.
Thanks

You need a 75w-90 GL5 oil
If the gearbox is on good condition, the Silkolene Silktran Syn 5 will be ideal. If it's had some wear, go for the Motul Gear 300 or Redline Lightweight Shockproof

Oilman (or indeed anyone else!), what would you recommend as the best oil for the gearbox and diff on a 1997 Catalunia? Having gone through the hassle of needing a reconditioned gearbox on my old car (MK2 Golf GTi) I would like to use the best oil for the scooby! I've previously heard good things about Redline oils.

Redline oils are very good and quite a few Subaru guys use the Lightweight Shockproof. The 75w-90 is also suitable. The Castrol Syntrax is worth considering, so is the Motul Gear 300, Silkolene Silktran Syn 5 and Mobilube SHC
