Default Money to spend.

Hi peeps, I would like a little advice.

As I have just sold my bus I have a bit of money to spend.

Before I start on some basic tuning I want to give her a full service so what are the best parts to get fo the following.

Oil, Plugs, Oil filter, Coils.

I have also priced up for Turbo back Nur spec R, set of wheels 17's o 18's (not yet decided) And I'm looking for a large cone filter to go on.
(before you tell me to go for a panel, I'm going to put it in the inner wing and have a seperate pipe)

Cheers for your reply.

What make of oil?

I assume that the standard oil filter is better than K&N or HKS etc?

Millers CFS does 10W-40, as used/sold by ZEN Performance. Other good oils are Silkolene, Motul, Mobil. You can also put in 15W-40, 10W-50 and 15W-50 into a Classic. Just don't use a '60' hot weight oil - too thick.

Put it this way; the OEM Subaru one is fine and does all that's required from it... so why take a 'risk'. It's a known quantity.

Always stick to OEM service items.

Thanks for your input.

Thats the reply I was hopeing for.

In regard to the oil filter I'm pleased that oem is good enough.

As I`m starting the tuning process Ijust wanted to make sure that I`m fitting the best that i can before i start.

Think about it... For such a fundamental engine component, Subaru would have extensively tested the filter's design/performance in engine dyno testing, prior to signing off the engine as fit for use in their new model... to be unleashed upon the 'lucky' public.

LOL. No, what I meant was when Subaru invented the Impreza back in 1992 to date.

As you were...

I'm coming off as a complete noob here arent I!!!.

My last scoob was modified by me giving someone a wedge of cash and leeting them get on with it, this time I want to do it all myself as I have with the cars I had before that. I get more out of the process that way.

I'm a fairly good spanner man so theres not much i cant do but, I`m grabbing as much info on the sccob as poss as Ive been predominently a ford man and they have all been NA and not as highly sprung as my scoob.

I want to get another 100 ponies before I think about a new lump to play with.

The trader I baught from told me that its a type 260 but I cant be sure without a power run. I know it feels quick but not sure if its 260 quick. thats one more reason to get it serviced fully so i can do a before and after run so i know what my blood and sweat will give me.

Type 260
I guess he means it is the 260ps wrx (should have a Z4 ecu),i'm guessing it's an import?
I doubt you will get an extra 100bhp out of it without an engine rebuild and associated mods (fuelling, injectors, turbo, ecu etc) and the gearbox won't like it as well.

Yes it is an import but like i said I cant be sure if it is a 260 unless i get a dyno run. BTW i thaught that a standad gersbox was alright for 350-360 bhp and torque before it needs beefing up. anyway if i break it then that just give me an excuse to upgrade that as well

It'd have to be manufactured in late 1994 (from Oct 94) to be 260PS WRX. Check the VIN plate on the passenger's side front suspension turret. Does the 'Apllied model' code read GC8C48D? If so, then yes, you have a 260PS model.

Yes. Quite right.

But at least you'll know what you'll be 'happy' with after a RR (if you have one). The EJ20 turbo engine is normally very good for its quoted power, and often exceeds it by about 5% or so - old or not. So by that reasoning, if your motor is putting out 5%-odd less (about 245+ bhp), then I'd be happy with that...

Too right!!!

I guess the next question is where is my cash best spent after the service.

I have about £1500 to spend including service items. as earlier quoted i want exhaust wheels and induction so i dont think ill have much change but if i do where should i go?

Known prices (or best/worst case prices):-

18" wheels/tyres £600-800
Walbro 255 fuel pump £80
Cone filter CAIK £70-140
NGK PFR7B plugs £20-30
Nur Spec 3" catback system (2nd hand?) £250-350(?)
Apexi PFC ECU (2nd hand) £200-300
Remap by JGM £288

If you add the best prices, then you get to your c.£1500; worst is nearly £2000... so shop around and buy decent 2nd hand stuff, where possible. Of course, if you opt for 17" wheel/tyres, this will significantly slash the cost and bring you within budget INC. the service items, as desired.

Life's easier if you stick to 17" wheels on a classic, and STI (2002-2005) wheels are a cheap fit that clear Brembo's - your next best buy !

Agree with dunx - 18s can look good, but at the expense of ride comfort e.g. crashing over potholes... hell, even crisp packets!

17s after all are a "+2" fitment on a 94 WRX (15s std), so you really don't wanna go bigger. 16s or 17s are the best compromise for looks/handling, on a Classic IMO...
