Default Help Please - Cylinder Head Cam Caps issue

Hi All,

Thanks for reading.

I'm having an engine built at the moment and have a pair of used V5 STI heads being fitted. They are in good condition and were sold to me as complete.

However, my engine builder called me earlier today to say that one of the 'caps' is missing and another one is damaged but only slightly.

The missing cap is the one that the cam postion sensor mounts to.

Now, i'm really not sure about the function of these caps but the builder advises that the missing one must be found or replaced. He didn't say if the other needed replacing or not but it had some chipping to it.

He also told me that Subaru don't sell the caps separately as they're usually matched to the heads.

So, my issue is that i'm certainly one cap down, possibly two if the other is no use, but have a pair of heads i paid £500 for so am keen to get them working!

Can anyone offer any advice on what i can do? I have contacted the seller but he's currently working away and unable to help so i'll sort it and discuss later with him.

Might someone have the neccessary caps available for me to buy?

Annoyingly time is very short as i have Andy Forrest booked for the 23rd Feb to map the car. I really don't want to delay him as he's been booked for some time.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

head and cap are matched, so a replacement cap isnt really a good move.

As above - the caps/heads are lined bored at the factory - but sometimes a seal carrier cap can be "fettled" to fit.
Try someone like API Engines for spares.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Out of interest, does anyone have access to any pics of the caps that would be supplied as standard on the V5 STI heads?

I ask because the builder did mention that the markings on the caps weren't the type he'd normally expect to see. Now, i'm not sure what he should be seeing but it may be useful for me to know.

Cheers

172sport,

Thanks for the pic. I'm assuming that is showing the stripped head without cams but with the cam caps in place? 3 for each cam?

On that basis i guess it's one of the ones with the extra lumps that i'm after. Looking at them they are clearly 'sided' as to which cam they're for so i'll need to be sure i get the correct one.

The engine builder would need to make really sure that it is right and measure that its round and not oval, as it might pinch the cam and smear or be to slack and cause oil pressure problems and leaks.

If I am not mistaken V5 heads are phase 2?
I might have something I will have a look.

Brett,

The builder is an experienced Subaru chap so i trust his judgement on this.

Yes, V5 is phase 2.

If you happen to have something then please do PM me. I'll definately need these parts so will have to source somewhere!

Cheers

Right,

I've found a set of Cam Caps (6 in total) from a Passenger side 2000 head which i have bought.
However, my builder tells me that he needs an End Cap for the Drivers side head too.

Does anyone know if they're interchangeable or might someone have an End Cap off a 99/00 Drivers Side head that i could buy?

Cheers

James
