Default Is this the end??

Hello all

I've got a biiiig problem with my Scoob

It's a 1995 JDM WRX and last year the crank pulley bolt came loose. This damaged the crank pulley so I got a replacement and fitted it. Another 6 months has gone by and the damned swine thing has come loose again

Close examination shows that the wobbling crank has this time ground a small bevel on the end of the crankshaft and mullered the woodruff key. The keyway doesn't look too bad but it might be a little worn

On top of all this, the camshaft oil seals are leaking and the engine's just basically in need of a lot of work to put it right. So much so that I'm contemplating getting a replacement engine to just drop in but by the time it's fitted and a couple of other odds and sods repaired it's probably going to cost me the thick end of £1,200

I'm really just looking for the benefit of Scoobynet's experience. How much could I likely expect to sell the car for if I fixed the problems? Would I be better to just sell the thing for spares and repairs and be done with it

Would not spend £1200 on a car that even mint is only worth around £2000 better off stripping car as is and get about £1500 - £2000 for all bits separately and then buy another . Bought my crashed 93 wrx off insurance for £200 ,shell is goosed along with bonnet , bumper and wings every thing else okay , have already got back £2000 and still have loads left so is worth strippin . Managed to buy a 2002 sti prodrive style full service history 70,000 miles ,just had £2000 scoobyclinic 320-340 bhp pack fitted by previose owner , managed to get it for £6000 there are bargins to be had .

Yeah that seems to make sense. I'm not after chucking good money after bad.

I'm not sure that I'd go to the mess on of stripping the thing to bits as I've not really got anywhere to store it and strip it down. It's got some decent alloys on it and I still have the old ones to put back on so I'd probably just do it like that.

Any ideas how much I could expect to get for it on a spares or repairs basis?

Is there a lack of supply with 2nd hand engines or long blocks near you in Bavaria? Round this neck of the woods you can get them from anywhere between £300-£750 (good one in classifieds now for only £300). This would be by far the cheapest option, you could probably swap them over in a day or so & you'd have a load of spares!

Well I did look into that option but, and as much as it affects my sensibilities to say it, I wouldn't want to tackle the job myself

This of course means paying someone else to screw it all together which is when the price starts to fly up

It's not that big a job changing an engine, especially if the new one has the ancilleries still.

Same thing happened to me, cost me a crankshaft pulley (upgraded to a lightweight item), a woodruff key, a toothed crankshaft pulley and an oil pump. The second two items were damaged getting them off! It is also advised that you replace the cambelt at the same time.

It's a good days work to complete the job, so long as all goes well. It' really quite easy, just need an engine hoist, which can be hired, a friend would help when engaging the engine to the box, but apart from that it's a one man job.
Get a tested engine, for as little as £500, hire of the hoist plus fluids, £100, plus have a bit of cash on standby just in case for breakages!
