Has it always had a low pressure or did it just drop?
What's the pressure when warm at 3000 rpm?
It could always be the pressure sensor playing up......
Can you double check the pressure with someone?

Question

I have no idea! I only finished putting the clocks in yesterday. I think with yours being a 2.5 it may have a different pump.

See what you get at 3000 rpm when warm.

2.5 has the same pump afaik.

2 bar on tickover here too.

Are you sure the gauges are accurate?

Nige, Don't worry too much.

I have copied the following directly from the Subaru wkshop manual.

BTW (14.5 psi = 1 Bar)

Start the engine, and then measure the oil pressure.
Oil pressure:

98 kPa (1.0 kg/cm2, 14 psi) or more at 800 rpm
294 kPa (3.0 kg/cm2, 43 psi) or more at 5,000
rpm

• If the oil pressure is out of specification, check oil
pump, oil filter and lubrication line. <Ref. to
LU(H4DOTC)-21, INSPECTION, Engine Lubrication
System Trouble in General.>
• If the oil pressure warning light is turned ON and
oil pressure is in specification, replace the oil pressure
switch. <Ref. to LU(H4DOTC)-21, INSPECTION,
Engine Lubrication System Trouble in
General.>
NOTE:
The specified data is based on an engine oil temperature
of 80°C (176°F).
5) After measuring the oil pressure, install the oil
pressure switch. <Ref. to LU(H4DOTC)-18, INSTALLATION,
Oil Pressure Switch.>
Tightening torque:
25 N·m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.1 ft-lb)

Hope this puts your mind at rest
Phil

All depends on what it was really. If mine fell to 1bar suddenly I would be very worried.

Yup, I agree.

But the guages were only fitted yesterday and there is no suggestion that it has suddenly dropped.

As it stands, it is at the exact figure quoted by the factory when idling & as long as it hits 3 bar at 5,000 rpm then there is technically nothing wrong with it, so it would be silly to start worrying about things just yet. IMHO

Mine idles at 2 bar, but drops towards 1 bar with the clutch in coming to a rolling halt.

Healthy 6 bar the rest of the time, at the usual 4500 rpm.

Nige: My STi is the same as the other guys. What oil do you have in and how old is it? When I changed from Silkolene 15W50 to Motul 300V 5W40 the oil pressures dropped a lot. Good. I don't want my car to have high blood pressure.... When oil gets old, unless it is a full ester oil, the Viscosity Index Improvers deteriorate and the viscosity drops and so the pressure can drop. I have an oil cooler and my engine oil is usually about 80-90C - that can also make a difference. Peter

Your edit has changed things somewhat.
Get it idling properly and then tell us the pressure.

Mine sits at 3.5 bar at warm idle (82 degrees oil temp) and 6.5 bar when driving normally

although mine is a blobeye Spec C but i doubt that would make a difference

My 01/02 STI (standard block) always ran 2 bar at idle and 6 bar under load with Silkolene ProS 10W 50. I ran some Castrol 10W 60 stuff once and idle pressure remained the same altho peak went up to 6.5 bar. Gauges are defi BF.

I'd be a bit concerned about 1 bar at idle if the reading is genuine.

Yes sorry Nick i did say tick over at 750rpm originally. Its definitely 500rpm. Thanks for the reply guys i will check it again tommo and make sure there are no kinks in the new flexy o/p line. Oil and filter changed 700 miles ago with 10/40 Gtx. Nige

If its 1 bar @ 500 rpm then I can't see a problem.
Take a pressure at 3000 rpm but get the idle sorted out as that is a problem.

Are you sure your tachometer is correct? 500rpm is very low for an STI to idle at. My tachometer shows 1000rpm at idle but the select monitor shows 750-800rpm at idle.

Low oil pressure (if oil is good quality) is a sure sign of a worn out oil pump or worn out bottom end bearings, both of which will lead to an expensive rebuild in a short time. I would be very quick to do a thorough check (maybe with a more accurate pressure gauge from a garage) to get peace of mind.

May have sorted this problem. I repositioned the flexy to the o/p switch as it did have a bit of a sharp bend in it. 1.5 bar @ 500rpm, 5 Bar @ 3000rpm temp 80+deg. Now 500rpm tick over has never caused a problem over the last 3 years should i be worried about it? As Nick has mentioned it is low. The car is not struggling at this rpm,If the rpm clock in correct? Its smooth and very quiet. Nige

Wink

Changed oil & filter today Used a genuine Subaru filter + Mobil 1 fully synthetic. Oil preasure stayed @ 1.5 bar at 500rpm. So im quite happy now. Nige
