CLASSIC WRX vs STI
Hi. i was curious to know what is the difference between the classic shape wrx and wrx-sti in terms of engine and gearbox. i read another thread that said the sti can run up 400hp depending on engine condition. could the sti gearbox also run that much power. and what does open deck and close deck mean. cheers

Dont confuse the power that a classic sti can run to that of a new age one
The classic STI's came with uprated "forged" pistons, though forging is only a term used for the way the metal is formed to that shape, it does not denote how good the metal was in the first place, so you get different qualities of "forged" pistons, just count the STI ones as very cheap n cheerful but stronger than the cast ones found in the WRX.
Power wise, 350-360 is about as much as you want to run a classic STI on reliably, though a new age will run 400bhp all day, due to engine changes over the classics.
But the STI's will have uprated parts over the WRX's, this being suspension, brakes (on the earlier cars, with the later STI's having 2 pot rear brakes to the wrx's single pot calipers), DCCD was only fitted to the STI's and an "uprated" gearbox (which wasnt really uprated, just the internals were hardened so can take a "little" more torque) but not that much more!
WRX's started out with closed deck blocks (google is your friend here ) but eventually ended up with open deck blocks, where as the STI's ran semi closed deck blocks (or closed deck on the early cars).
Really there is just too much to list that varies, steering rack for instance on the STI is a quicker item than the WRX, but basically the STI is a more uprated, focused car.
