Default power cut off problem

hi. when i drive my skooby usually in 3rd gear and above at high revs there seems to be a power cut and then it kicks in again and this will keep hapening while driving fast as you get to 3rd gear and above. also sometimes as i drive off from standstill the power seems to cut off and on randomnly for a few seconds and then the acceleration is normal. also the chek engine light comes on half the time of everyday driving. the car is a wrx bt has had an sti turbo fitted which is running on high boost. can anyone help. cheers

You could be hitting the fuel cut which is about 15psi i think. If u have a boost gauge check what its reading when u get these power cuts.

if the CEL comes on then i would suggest you check the code(s).
You can manually check them if it's a classic shaped impreza Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia under the ECU heading.
When you say STI turbo which one?

Change the MAF (23) reset the ecu.

Check here for the Applied Model Code (on the VIN plate passenger side suspension turret) this will help actually identify what impreza you have.

TD05-16G was used on early STIs and WRXs.
Your indicated boost level isn't standard on any WRX iirc so may indicate a chip/altered ecu.

where in the engine would i find the MAF. is this a sensor. how much would it cost for one of these. i have a reading of the pressure sensor on the ecu aswel. do you think this could be related to the problem of the cut off of power. what is the pressure sensor there for? cheers

The MAF is a black box connected to your induction kit as picture (it has the connector coming off it)

Thing is with the fault codes 1 going wrong may bring up other fault codes.
he cost of the MAF depends on what year your car is have alook here and compare your 'Applied Model' code on the VIN plate with this

The 7 digit "applied model" code found on the vehicle identification plate inside the engine bay is decoded in the following way.
1.Series code G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy etc.
2.Body type F=Wagon C=Sedan
3.Engine type 8=2.0L Turbo
4.Year code A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95&96 D=MY97 (facelift) E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00
5.Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch
6.Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA
7.Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD

just popped out and had a look. it seems to be a wrx, 94 model, 5 speed manual. how much could i get hold of one for. is there anyone on this forum who might have one for sale. also whilst driving fast on gear changes flames usually pop out of the back box. is this due to the car running on high boost. it does have a full jasma exhaust system with de-cat. do you think this MAF could solve he problem or could there be something else too? cheers

Unfortunately the MAF for early cars is expensive about £200+.
You will need a green label MAF if you can find one 2nd hand.
JASMA is just a standard of exhaust not an actually make but with the possibility of the MAF going and the decat i would expect a flame and pop.

Depending on where you are in the UK try and find a friendly specialist who could possibly lend you one and give your car a good looking over.

It would be a good idea to carry out an ecu reset, then go for a drive and recheck the fault codes.
The fault codes you are getting might be from years ago. At least then you will know which code the current problem is showing.

Give the reset a go if the CEL comes on again then i'm afraid you will have to take it to someone who can physically help you
