Default Oil Leak

I've just been round to my mates to change the spark plugs and oil.

Upon pulling up outside his house, smoke started pouring from under the bonnet, and out the scoop. We looked up couldn't really see anything.

After a while it did go away, but again we couldn't see anything. So, we changed the plugs, then went on to the oil. We removed the plastic cover underneath, and my mate removed the heat shield .......maybe covering the turbo under the car? I'm not sure which shield it was to be honest, but you could see fresh oil.

He thinks its coming from the rocker cover gasket.....does this sound right? It your stood looking at the engine, its on the left hand side of it. I know it will be difficult for anyone to say it is this gasket without looking at it, but he said it cant really be coming from anywhere else.

We changed the oil and filter, and I've just drove 5miles home, and it was all ok. When I went to park though outside my house, you could smell oil from inside the car, but not outside. I dont know if this is down to the leak or the new oil etc?

I'm guessing the gasket won't be expensive, but how much roughtly would this cost to change at an independant garage?

Thanks a lot

i would say your 100% right (rocker cover drivers side) its a common problem leaks onto your manifold ,you wont really notice when your driving as its blowing away,,dont know what dealer costs as i do my own work,,,it needs a bit of stripping to do this(air box, etc) 6 10ml bolts .take off cover , clean it well round the rubber gaskets and dry it ,,,get good sealer(not cheap ****) WYNES or somthing,,and put some round the 6 bolts and washers(not forgetting the gaskets too)

Its not to hard to do - more awkward than anything to get too. I'd try without any sealant first, just the gasket

Good luck

They look right. Can you phone or get a part number off the web. Failing that - take yours off and compare it, it sould come off in one piece

you will lose some oil, just try and clean it off and any old sealer needs to be taken off (both surfaces)then try get it as dry as you can, you,ll be able to do it alright

Chris,

Be carefull here... There are several types of gasket fitted to the turbo boxer engine, although they all look the same at a quick glance, you will find that they come with a diferen't amount of location lugs & the lugs can be in different positions, they also differ where they fit over the camshaft cap.. You can also get gaskets that that look identical in every way shape and form, but if you measure them they are a different thickness.

It's gonna cost you around £45 to get everthing you need, so If you wan't to be sure before you part with your dosh, give me your vin no: and I will look up the part numbers for you.

Phil
