Default De-Cat = Remap??

Hi guys,

Just a quick question. If a MY99 Impreza Turbo 2000 has been decatted should it have been remapped to account for this? I have read that most people do have their cars remapped after the de-cat but is it an absolute necessity?

What problems can occur if it has not been remapped but has been decatted?

Thanks,

strictly speaking you "should" get it mapped and get the most out of your car, but it isnt necessarily needed.

mine would overboost resulting in fuelcut pretty much every time giving it a bit of a thrash, remapping fixed that.

but i do know people that are running decat with no remap with no problems.

If you're not getting any fuel cut then it should be fine on a MY99. It would be advisable though to add some instrumentation just to monitor everything, especially due to the flaky MAFs on that year. A boost gauge and a knock detector (KnockLink) would be a good start and these will be useful if at some later stage you add more mods and/or go down the re-map route.

With these you can check that the boost isn't spiking and that you aren't getting any det.

It is for a car I am going to view at the weekend...

The only mods are Bailey dump valve (I want to remove this and return to standard) and full s/s decat exhaust.

Would you advise to steer clear?

Not necessarily. Chances are it will be fine, the detonation issue can effect any Scoob modified or not. You may find a totally standard MY99, buy it, take it out for a thrash, and put a hole in one of the pistons.

It it runs okay, no smoke etc. then it probably fine. Find out from the owner when/if they had the MAF replaced last, if you buy it and have any doubt get a new one ASAP. Only £90 from the main dealers and a five minute job to fit.

Then as mentioned a knock detector is a worthwhile investment to preserve the life of the engine.

Full de-cat is a really good mod for MY99/00, releases up to 30bhp for very little effort / expense and is a necessary upgrade for any further modifications.

This will be the first Scoob, bit of a n00b, so get scared easily.

The smoke you talk of... is that on boost or idle? How much is a KnockLink?looked on scoobyworld and they dont seem to stock them. Are they easy to install?

Thanks for your help :-)

I've got a MY99 too. I had a full turbo back decat fitted without remap, after being assured by AS Performance (well respected specialist up north) that the classics rarely have issues with this. mine's been fine since (touch wood!), but do intend on the remap in future, once I've done a few other bits and bobs.

Incidentally, mine also has a bailey's VTA on. I've driven it with the standard recirc on then with this on, and to be honest I've noticed no difference.

Good luck with whatever you get anycase bud.

Check for blue smoke (oil) out of the exhaust once it's warmed up, would most likely be at its worst when pressing on though you're more likely to see it as you lift off. This can indicate the that the turbo (or it's oil seals) is on it's last legs, head gasket failure, or worn pistons / bores. Also listen carefully for any noises, deep rumbley type noise can indicate the big ends are going (also brought about by detonation).

As for Knock detectors, everyone used to use KnockLink Mocom Racing - Performance car and trackday products but there is now an alternative in the KS3 Knock Analyser KS-3 Knock Analyser - Knock Detection System. Complete Kit - Knock Sensor Included. seems a bit more advanced than the old KnockLink but I don't have first hand experience of them.
