Default Pop's and bangs ?

Hi guys ,

Been reading a bit in other post's about people wanting the pops and bangs.
From what i hear this is adjusting the overrun in your map.

Are there any downsides to this ? and can this cause any problems on the back of the turbo blades?
i get very small pops and bangs when the car is warming up.

will this be more a novelty thing to start with ?
I'm just wondering if i should take my car and have the map adjusted to try it but don't want to cause any turbo / engine damage.

I have an STi 03 340bhp AVC-R Full de-cat

Regards

Chris.

easiest way to get a pop and bang is to have a ecu with built in anti-lag and launch control. beware if u do go this route or any route of getting pop's and bangs it can damage the turbo. i had it on my gems and only used it now and then and it was ok, but if you going to use the als system everyday you may end up having to buy turbo's on a monthly basis.

Yeha thanks for the buddy , I had heard that this causes turbo damage.
I thought it be best to ask the question before i went ahead and done something costly.

I had anti-lag on my last 3 cars with AutronIc ECU, never caused any turbo damage at all, it,s not FULLY blown anti-lag anyway, more for show tbh, put a mapper can get you pops & bangs by over-run and it,s cheaper than buying a stand alone ECU....

I get pos and bangs with just a full de-cat and a VTA dumpvalve.
I can also get flames all by boosting to 3k revs and letting off

with pops and bangs mapped i managed to crack the exhaust housing of my AFP 20g
Not sure if related to pops and bangs or fuel additives but after new housing fitted and the pops and bangs removed my Lambda oxygen sensor tip blew off and wedged in the turbo housing under the exhaust side wheel causing loss of boost / damage to the wheel.
Turbo had to get new exhaust and compressor wheel / new internals.

on the up side turbo is almost brand new again

Also should say that the novelty wears off and they start do your head in as some of them are like a gun going off which kinda draws too much attention to you, especially when the cops are behind you / you are popping down the high street
Also Andy F says that most peeps return within a few months to get the pops and bangs removed

I had the pops and bangs for while. Doesnt really cause any damage as its just over run mapped in to the ECU but I did see a slight drop in fuel economy. It is really just a novelty and Iv had it taken off now. Was fun for a bit but I got bored of it.

Your car will pop from time to time anyway when the exhaust gets really hot.

IMO I wouldnt really bother with it to be honest. Just get your car mapped up and running efficiently

the td05 based turbos are poor for the hotside cracking anyway!

my 16g was removed from its original car and had cracks around it anyway, running stock boost for 60k miles

i welded this up and ground it all down and its been fine since on my car (running 1.6bar)

if you are running an apexi ecu you can make the pops and bangs switchable via the aircon button

not sure how pops and bangs could damage the trubo? all it is is unburnt fuel in the exhaust combusting with a pop, can see the pressure being high enough to be a problem? unless there was somethign else up?

as far as antilag goes theres very very few people out there running true full blown antilag, most are pretty tame and not set up very aggressivly, thats prob y you didn't kill the turbo. also how much you use its has a affect, i know of someone who's brand new engine last 3 weeks till it burnt out the valves and blew the turbo.

even prodrive destroy turbo's with the level of antilag they use, hence new turbo every rally.

Not all ECU can have Pop's and Bangs added on the over-run it depends on the over-run cells used and the ability to alter this along with changed to the fuel re-inject parameters when the throttle is closed.

The Apexi uses row 2 for idle and very light cruise. in this instance row one can pretty much be set to do what you like.
It will only hit row 1 on over-run.

All the OE ECU I have logged use row 1 or column 1 (depending on map orientation) for idle / light cruise but a slight rescale and change to the load value would probably allow the above to be mapped (not tried it yet on OE ECU).
