Default Best way to get 400-450 bhp from classic STI Type R??

Hi I have a MY99 Type R with a Apexi ECU fitted walbro fuel pump, SX fuel pressure regulator, Scoobymania twin dump downpipe, Blitz Nur spec R 3" straight through system and an APS CAK.

What other mods, turbo fmic injectors etc would i need to get around 400-450 bhp?

Regards

Chris

You might need an engine overhaul if it has a few miles on it- for reliablilty
parallel fuel mod
catch can
stainless headers
FMIC
PPG 5speed or 6 speed conversion gearbox
boost controller
quite alot of money helps!

2.35 or possibly 2.5 will be the way to go for a stong build... 2.35 is the better, but gets expensive...

Turbo choice is the most essential

It is relatively easy with the correct Turbo to get over 450bhp for a reasonable price on a 2 litre (I know as I've done)

I dont have a parallel fuel mod
Uprated gearbox you dont need unless you are tracking as your's will last - mine only went last year and I've been over 400bhp for some time
You would need Pistons, Rods - You wouldnt need an uprated Crank
Defo need ARP rod bolts on the heads as these are a very, very weak part of the engine.......

You need a decent ECU...............

Plus usual things like running Methonal mix in fuel
Decent filter/exhaust

Clutch - AP Organic is fine at that level of power unless you want to destroy the car with 1/4 mile runs (that will destroy everything)
740cc Injectors, uprated fuel pump and FPR
FMIC

PFC would need its bespoke boost control kit (COM link cable, uprated boost solenoid, 2bar MAP sensor), to go beyond 1.1bar.

But it's still uses the MAF... I suspect it's prudent to go MAFless when going for >400bhp - which the Simtek offers for the cheapest price, and can work off any later model/aftermarket MAP sensor (for greater boost levels).

Forget about how to do it...

In these times can you afford it? You do know your looking at best 10-12k and that will be doing it on the cheap!

If your ok with that good luck with it all mate

Yeah, I had my PFC mapped by Simon too - cool.

You're lucky, as being a 1998 your car is blessed, lol, with the higher 1.7bar (relative pressure) MAP sensor, so are able to run a max of c.1.6bar if you wanted .

Me - having a 1993 - only have a 1.2 bar MAP, so was mapped at 1.1bar. I have since acquired the boost kit form a member on here for about half the price of new , and intend to get Simon to fit and map it at whatever boost is safe (prob 1.35bar)... That'll be after I get the 440s and a ARC bar and plate TMIC fitted, first

Having done this exact thing I would say to do it reliably you'd need the following and I'm stating the obvious:

A reliable fuel supply (which you have)

A built engine with forged internals (2.5 will need rods and pistons too)

A gearbox strong enough to cope (a standard 5 speed isn't)

A decent ECU an apexi power FC will cope either with or without the boost control kit but an AVCR is advised. I'd also possibly look at going down the Simtek route.

I ran an apexi using its built in boost control with a two port solenoid at 1.5 bar for 30,000 miles without any issues at all.

Food for thought.
