Default Looking up JDM Sti parts = GDB ?

Hi,

I am in communications with someone trying to figure out which parts I need for my car. It is a MY2001 JDM STi7 and the vin starts off with GDB, he says that is all I need to signify that it is a JDM STi.....is the JDM My2001 WRX a GDA ?

Cheers,
Ray

Shows how much that person knows then!

GDB is the chassis code. After that there is also an 'applied model' code like A, B, C, etc which will signify the MY of the car. So going from the table below I would think your car would be - GDB, applied model B

It would be your VIN code which would signify whether or not your car is a JDM as Jap VIN codes are only six digits long.

Here is how it all works:

Impreza GD/ GG (2000/ 02 – 2007/ 04)
--------------------------------

<GGB is only for A and B. (Wagon Sti did NOT make after C)>
e.g. GDA: 2.0L Turbo AWD

G is Impreza

Body Code:
D is Sedan
G is Wagon

Model Code:
A is 2.0L 4WD (DOHC TURBO EJ205 WRX)
B is 2.0L 4WD (DOHC TURBO EJ207 Sti)
C is 1.5L 2WD (DOHC N/A EJ154 Model G only <1.5R>)
D is 1.5L 4WD (DOHC N/A EJ154 Model G only <1.5R>)
2 is 1.5L 2WD (SOHC N/A EJ15)
3 is 1.5L 4WD (SOHC N/A EJ15)
6 is 2.5L 4WD (ONLY FOR EXPORT MODEL)
9 is 2.0L 4WD (DOHC N/A Model A and B only EJ204)

Applied Model Code:
A. 2000/ 02 – 2001/ 08
B. 2001/ 06 – 2002/ 10
------------------------------Minor Change
C. 2002/ 09 – 2003/ 07
D. 2003/ 06 – 2004/ 05
------------------------------Minor Change
E. 2004/04 – 2005/ 05
------------------------------Minor Change
F. 2005/ 04 – 2006/ 06
G. 2006/ 04 – 2007/ 04
-------------------------Full Model Change

Grade:
IS: EJ152/ Wagon Only
ISS: EJ152/ Wagon Only

15I-S: EJ152/ Wagon Only

Cheers

This same person has supplied me with info that the front left wheel bearing will be the same on the MY2001 Sti7 and WRX.....what do you think, any reason why they would have uprated the wheel bearing on the STi v. WRX ?

Thanks for the hekp

I would have thought they would be different. The STi hub will be different to the WRX as it has the braket to take the brembo's? The 2005 STi ith the larger hubs are certainly different.

The reason the STi would require bigger bearings is, heavier, more powerful, bigger brakes all leading to much more stress on the bearing under heavy driving.

They could have been tight though and kept the bearings the same

Believe it or not he DOES know his stuff!!

If a VIN starts with GC8, GF8, GDB, GDA etc etc then it is a JDM Import. This is then followed by a 6 digit number which is the vehicles I.D.

A VIN starting GDB immediately tells you that you are dealing with an Imported STI. The subsequent numbers are only a build no: and contain no other decodeable data, so without the Jap Parts program you cannot determine anything else about the car.

All European cars start with JF1 followed by a further series of 14 letters & numbers which denote it's body type, when it was built, transmission type, vehicle ID etc etc.

With regard to the wheel bearings:

The front wheel bearings fitted between 1992 & 2005 were identical for both the WRX & STI (incidentally, they use the same front Brg on all derivatives of the Impreza, Legacy & Forester between 1992 & 2005)

Subaru Like to keep things as simple as possible!!

The rears however do differ between WRX & STI as the hubs are larger.
