im going to view a 1998 sti type R coupe tomorrow
anything i should look out for?it will be my first impreza and would like some tips on what to look out for

If you're not sure what to look for take someone who is.
Smokey turbos,oil leaks ,clonking noises from the suspension, etc
I would think the main thing would be the DCCD working properly unfortunately i don't know anything about that.
Is it a private sale or trade?

Same things to look for in any other car. Specifically, I'd want a full history and evidence of a recent rebuild or I wouldn't leave the house. Nice attitude after a whole 2 posts.

just am going to look at it tomorro so i only have today online to get info....
anyone know how i would check the dccd?its a fresh import on 40k miles so surely it shoul;dnt need evidence of a rebuild?are they that weak??
i have experience of other 2l turbo 4wd/rwd but just no knowlege of sti imprezas....

If I were you I'd research a lot more before getting one. Certainly not leaving it the day before to find out about them The engines are the weak point and if it all goes wrong, which it can do on Impreza engines, you'll be looking at £3k+ for a rebuild on an sti.

so what your saying is that they arent reliable...
the one in question has 3''downpipe,tein coilovers,full 3'' blitz catback,apexi pfc,blitz dsbc @1.4bar,fmic,and full cage,im guessing around 300bhp mark

all my old cars i have been first owner from japan and have never had any problems before but none of these have been subaru

We all have different things in mind when we go looking for cars. Imprezas are generally reliable, I've had 5 over 10 years one of which was a newly imported sti5 typeR. I go for paperwork, history and on my last classic wanted one with a knackered engine or a rebuilt one. It's well reported that Impreza engines on classics are their weak point with everything else being fairly reliable. The last one I got had a gone engine though.
Something with a cage already in it won't be driven carefully to Tesco's and back every weekend Also, check the road tax side of things, although built pre 2001 it will probably be taxed as a group G.

i havent seen it myself until tomorrow but a friend has gone seen it and he said the bodywork is mint as is interior...
as for the cage-that isnt worrying me after all we would be very naive to think that 99% of jap imports arent abused in japan,as most of them are...
im just wondering what to look for?dccd was mentioned this is something im not familiar with,smokey turbo etc are common things to look for and i would be familiar from my previous cars
it is a trade sale that would involve my ek9 rx going the other way

The typeR has a rear wheel bias, 64% rear 36% front. By progressively locking the diff controller ( a white wheel near the handbrake) you can dial in a less rear wheel bias for bad driving conditions like heavy rain, snow, gravel etc. I know of no way of checking the diff, however, in the green position there should be no hopping or noises at low speeds.
Have the diff in orange at low speed the car will hop and make noises. The diff as far as I know shouldn't really be a problem. The main thing would be the engine, and save for hearing banging noises you won't be able to check this.
A car with a cage in wouldn't be for me personally as it's bound to have had a hard life.

dont be put off by the cage. there a bit of a fashion in japan. make sure its cold and not been started tell the seller if its even slightly warm you will walk away! and stick to that.. when you start it the engine may be slighty noisy but it should quieten down after a few minuites. if not walk away!you may also see some blue smoke when first started but thats nothing to worry about as the pistons are normally a bit loose in the bores before its warm and if its stood a while a small amountof oil can get dowm them. when its warm about ten minuites (yes i know thats a long time) hold the revs at 2k then blip it up to
4k at that point if you hear any sort of rattle walk away! check the dccd is working when you are moving by rolling the switch forward the display for it is in front of you a bit like an auto the lights go up and down as you roll it. turn it off at low speed when performing manouvers. there may also be water in the boot where the jack sits its a common problem and as long as its not rusted through its easily sorted. dont be tempted to give it loads of beans as its not mapped for uk fuel and you may knacker the big end bearings which is the problem everyone is talking about. unless its already been done it will need remapping by a specialist asap. and if it has ask who by. apart from that they are as reliable as any car if treated correctly. more info available at type-r-ra.co.uk and on here but as suggested i would do more research before doing the deal as these cars are very specialised and a little highly strung! and i love mine its one hell of a machine when you understand them and once you learn to drive it properly there is nothing that you wont stay with..

i always liked the ver 4/5 sti type r but never got to know too much about them but i guess all thats gonna change now

went to look at the car today,gave it a real going over and it is in mint condition....drove it and there is no noises etc
so i ended up leaving a deposit which will see me collecting the car next week sometime

if you think the glanza is quick in a straight line you'll s**t yourself with the typeR when i got mine my mate was runnig a td04 glanza,a quick little boost one night and he didnt try to race again
