There are always a few ECU's for sale on scoobynet, Do people buy them and then get them mapped as I am guessing they aren't plug an play or will some run another car just not to full performance?.... Sorry if my question seems abit dim but I don't know too much about it.

Depends really most would remappable ones would have been mapped for specific mods on that persons car so would require a remap.
Most ecus sold that have a letter/number or number/letter code are normally standard subaru ones.
