Default Cold start - running rough!!!!!

Hi,

I have a v2 sti. When i start the car from cold it starts first time every time, when its on choke the revs are roughly at 1,500rpm where they should be. Then 5-10 secs after starting the revs drop and rise, the engine sounds like its ******* and occassionly it cuts out! I try to push the accelerator down and some times the engine picks up and clears, other times it dies. Its the same when i drive off after about 2 mins from starting, it splutters down the road! but when its warm its a totally different car!! no probs what so ever! im not sure wher to look, its had plugs and coil packs.

HELP PLEASE!

Hi scooby46, it could well be your MAF. You can try and disconnect it and see if the car continues running. If it does then the MAF is knackered and you need a new one if it stalls then the MAF is probably ok. Go and try it and see what happens. This is not definitive but is a good indicator.

The MAF is located in the air intake pipe after the air box.

Could also be a faulty Coolant Temp Sensor.

As for the coolant temp sensor, are they cheap? might just stick a new onw in regardless - its a 13 year old car.

now and again starting my1995 wrx sometimes revs fluctuate.

also it starts from cold everytime but if i take a short journey say before it gets up to temp or just hits the temp, then alot of the time it wont start again for anything from 20 mins to an hour before it starts again.....its confusing the f**k outta me

Hello again, the coolant temp sensor is less than £20 IIRC. As you said maybe worth changing on an older car and it may cure the problem.
