I've read a few in depth threads on Scoobynet about oil and I don't think anyone fully agrees. I believe Semi 10w/40 or Fully 5w/40 is ok on engines without high mileages.

Some people say don't use 5w/40 but others say it's fine (the only real difference is how long they take to warm up in wintery conditions. The 40 indicates that they will both have the same properties at high temperatures. The above 2 oils are probably the best all-rounders for a standard/mildly tuned Impreza but something like 10w/50 would be better for a highly tuned car.

10w 40 will be fine. I'm running 5w 40 fully and works very well.
