Default Air intake temp.

Just fitted a temp sensor between cooler and inlet manifold. The temp reads 25-30c when just pottering about then goes to about 60c when i boot it, does this seem a little hot?

60 is too hot. Once you get over 40 you're starting to cause problems. Regardless of the actual 'danger' temperature (which will vary depending who you speak to) the bottom line is that a good, efficient intercooler will keep temps under control no matter what the situation, as long as you're moving and often even when you're not. A bad one will only control temps as long as you're taking it easy.

If you are running a top mount intercooler this is quite normal.
With an STi 3 at 335 bhp I found the ACT rocketed off the scale of the guage at 70 c. in a standing start from nothing to 100 mph.
With a Hybrid FMIC comparable figures are that the car will cruise around ambient and on WOT it may run 6-12 c. past ambient.

I fabricated my own undertray to pick up on the existing underbonnet studs.
I hope these piccies help.

Just to add, in view of people raving about an STi 8 TMIC being the way to go I did exactly that. Fitting was a lot bigger job than putting on a front mount. With the O/E STi 3 scoop, temps were not under satisfactory control. This was with the scoop sealed to the undertray. I then tried an STi 7 scoop. Again, results were not acceptable and it was only with an STi 8 scoop and underplate sealed around the STi 8 top mount that results were acceptable but not as good as from a good front mount. An FMIC is also a less cost option by the time you have the core, brackets and fittings, undertray and scoop, ignoring the additional work element.
At that point, after a turbo and injector change the car was running 371 bhp. With heat soak the ACT guage still reads in the high 60s.

That's about as succinct as it can be. I too wondered to myself about all these STi8 conversions a couple of years ago - they are not to my mind an easy mod, and definitely not a cheap one. It only looked a good value mod when FMIC kits were the best part of a grand.

The majority of the front mounts look gash because of the miles of piping IMHO. Thats what put me off I prefer a more factory look, for the power I've got no point in a front mount.

Put my standard air filter back on today its dropped temps about 5 degs when pottering about and 15 when booting it and its faster. I knew the standard filter was best with a panel filter but didnt realise how big a difference it made.

WaterCooling UK - UK PC Water Cooling Shop and Forums

you will need a resistor to which they sell for another couple of quid takes it from 12v down to 5v. You will also need to extend the temp sensor wires as they only come with 50cm I used some thin speaker wire.

It will not be accurate if its a thermocouple sensor either if you dont use the correct compesating cable as you have now introduced another cold junction.
Will be ok if its an RTD though.

digging about it seems its a good bit of kit, the mr2oc boys have been testing it and they seem to think its sample rate is close to twice per second.
I emailed the supplier and they said they didnt have the info, but the mr2 boys reckoned it would refresh as soon as you put your hand on it.

I suspect the sensing element will be in a stainless bulb so it wont be super fast anyway.

The kit I use comes from Mike Rainbird, R and B Motorsport. Testing against a laboratory thermometer it is accurate at 50 C and also at 0 C in an ice water mix. Sampling must be good as it responds almost instantaneously.

Maplins Andy?

I like the STi8 TMIC converstion because it has a factory look and I'm not keen on the miles of ugly FMIC tubing you get with a FMIC. I have a STi7 type scoop and it works really well only if the seal to the TMIC is good. I will be trying the original MY00 scoop as the temps are so under control even on a summers track day! The TMIC converstion is difficult but so can the FMIC with cutting and bumper removal not to mention boost pipes popping off on the difficult to get to pipes...

The temps can also be a factor of the turbo that is used. I found the TD05 was a hot running turbo while the VF's were far cooler.
