sensing element seems to be two wires.

Floyd, click me

I ended up buying 2 of these bad boys
They seem good and the whole shabang was £18.47 to my door next day delivery. Probe seems to be twin wire as said above and the mr2oc boys have been using these for a wee while to high success. Im going for 1 CT at the TB and 1 ambient within the cold air box to check on the efficiency (or otherwise ) of my setup and monitor any future mods for any improvement.
To reduce the voltage I bought 2 of these although I can now see that I should have spliced the powers together before the reducer and saved myself £2.49
so in theory you could bag my new setup for under £16.

Measure the resistance that way you should be able to tell what type of probe it is.

I'll have a go at it with the multimeter but I'm not promising that I can fly it properly

I will take a guess at it being an RTD, at ambient (25C) the resistance should be a ballpark 109.7ohms
If it is the accuracy will not be greatly affected by extending the cable.

Cheers Andy. I've been checking Maplins for ages looking for a cheap and small temp monitor. I've been using a handheld K type set up but this looks like I can fit it somewhere discrete and run stuff from it too.

not to mention boost pipes popping off on the difficult to get to pipes...
Pipes popping off are a thing of the past, certainly on Hybrid kits where the pipes are formed with a silicon joiner retaining rings and clamps are used, not jubilee type clips. The clamps have 10mm hex fasteners and are easily accessible.
There are three Wagons here with different intercooler solutions. All with the same ambient and ACT monitoring equipment. The STi 6 with an APS kit, the WRX with the Hybrid and the STi 3 with the STi 8 TMIC. When the STi 3 had the lower STi 7 scoop it did not perform satisfactorily and that car will shortly have a Hybrid FMIC so a direct comparison will be available but also of interest will be the relevant pressure drop comparison.
The Hybrid at a fraction of the cost on the WRX outperforms the APS which is bar and plate.
