Did your last engine fail in a big way - if so, it might be oil in the exhaust/cat/intercooler from your previous engine failure and will take a while to burn off.

Cheap mineral oil is the order of the day, the cheaper the better IMHO.

No it shouldnt be burning any oil, the P1 motor i built started first turn of the key one puff of smoke then clean as a whistle.

I would suggest you speak to the engine builder.

I don't think it should burn any oil going by my experience of a couple of engine rebuilds.

My STI6 block went in, first 500 miles on el mucho cheapo mineral oil, then semi for 500 miles then full synthetic after that.

Car did not need any oil top ups during run-in at all, and doesn't burn any now.

I agree with that. Using cheapo mineral oil for the run-in is a good idea as the synthetic oils protect the new engine components so much that they don't bed in properly.

Switch to the exotic synthetic stuff once the engine has bedded in

This is what happened to me or is still happening to a lesser extent. I am probably entering the 10k mark now after my rebuild.
Still a little smoke on start up and uses a bit of oil.

It was using around 1L maybe more every 1000km, easing off a bit now though

Doesnt sound right for a pro-built motor to me.

As you can imagine thats how i felt!.

It has forged pistons fitted and they can burn a little more oil, it has been running ok i.e no bad noises and starts up fine etc. Had it built about a year ago now and I only get to use her a couple of times a week.

Smoke is on start up and is fine once warm, tbh i think alot of its down to a worn turbo aswell Shall be replaced shortly
