Default New scooby owner, engine tapping when warm??

Hi guys,
Just bought my first scooby its a Jap ver 8 STi .

Am loving it but am very concerned about the loud tapping over 2.5k when the engine is warm. Sounds like tappets.. I think it is most prob well over due for an oil change so do you guys think that this is the cause??

Second question , what oil should i buy to go in this beast .. Ive heard Mobile 1 for these engines is good but am not sure what type? any fav types of oil you have??

Think thats about it for the moment, sure ill have loads of questions in the comming weeks for you

Cheers guys!!
Steve

Could be due to thin oil, too thin and you will get more tapping sound, slightly thicker oil should cure the problem

Worth letting someone with experience of Imprezas listen to the engine. Although they tend to be a mechanically noisy unit they usually quieten down somewhat as they get hot.

Go for motul, either the 15w50 or the 5w40 fully synth, probably the best oil out there oh and my MY03 JDM use to be a bit tapperty when you started her up, seems pretty common

Thanks for the replies guys, seems to be the other way round on mine Fine when cold but as normal temp comes up starts to tap.. going to get the oil done today.

Is it a must to use an OEM oil filter or will it be ok from my local motor factors shop?

thanks again guys.

Use an OEM - filters vary internally & many generic ones are suspect. Stick to a Subaru one - much safer!
