it's located on the right side in the middle of the gearbox on the 5-speed should be a 2-pin plug on the sensor

Hay mate, what dashboard do you have? If its an earlier one the VSS 2 is in the back of the speedo, had this problem myself after changing the speedo dials.

Speed signal 2 is not the speed sensor in the gearbox casing, it is the signal produced by the speedo head for the engine managment system.

If you loose this signal, the engine managment light will come on & the car will go into "limp home" mode, with restricted boost & rpm.

I am pretty sure thats what is wrong with mine. How do you fix it? Replace the speedo head?
I,ve got my ecu light on and showing code 24 and 33 which is the speed sensor.

Have you replaced you speedo recently? Mine came on after changing the dials to white ones, i forgot to replace 1 screw. If not the i don't think there is much serviceable, i thinks its a new speedo.

Is your speedo working? Needle moving as it should?

ah sorry - thought that you are lookin for the speed sensor on the gearbox - yes it's screwed in!!

I'm sorry thought you need that sensor! Maybe this one has gone and your speedo is not working because of that!?

My speedo is working ok and so is my rev counter. I had the clocks out looking for the sensor at the back of the clocks but don't know what it's like?
What needs to be done to fix this? Has it something to do with the screws making contact with the electrical contact film on the back?

You can either change your speedo assay for a new or second hand unit or you could get hold of another cable driven JDM speedo and remove the good sensor from it and fit it to yours.

To do this you will need to remove the speedo assay from the instrument pack and then remove the rear cover where the speedo cable attaches. Behind this you will a tiny plastic cog that is driven by the turning motion of the cable and a very small oblong sensor that is held in place by two screws. This sensor is triggered by the toothed cog & in turn sends a speed signal to the ECU.

The sensor is not available as a spare part from Subaru.

Ah it all makes sense now! I took mine to bits the other night and to be honest didn't really know what I was looking at.
So if I were to get another speedo head, take out mine and fit it that would work instead of trying to change the sensor part?

Im assuming that you have cable driven speedo, and if thats the case, then, yes a speedo head should solve your problem and get rid of code 33.

I would then carry out an ecu reset and you should find that evrything works as it should.

Are you sure you have a code 33, I have never known it happen on an electronic speedo head. If you do, the I will have a look at the wiring diags when I return to work on Tues.

I assume that your speedo and mileometer are working correctly.

You have me confused now... If your car was suffering from a speed sensor fault, the engine would be in limp home mode.. Your boost would be limited to 0.5 bar and the revs would be electronicly restricted to around 4000 rpm.

I would recomend that you carry out an ecu reset and then drive the car until the check engine lamp comes back on, then check the fault codes again.

I have done this, I am getting code 24 and 33, the check engine light is on and the car is limited to 4500rpm and is boosting at 1.5 bar?

In that case, it sounds like you have non standard boost control on the car. I.E a boost controller etc. The fact that it won't rev past 4,500 indicates that its in limp home mode, so you will have to cure the code 33 by fixing the speed sensor or by fitting another speedo head as mentioned previously.

Yes speedo and milometer are working fine. I think the problem is with the signal from the speedo or speed sensor - wherever that is? to the ECU. Will a new speedo cluster solve the problem, i've managed to locate one from a local breaker? Thanks
