Default scooby holding back at 4500rpm

its a standard wrx with a dump-valve and a exhaust, the air box and rest is all stndard, 1st gear it goes all the way thru, but when drop to 2nd, it sputters at 4500rpm as same as in 3rd gear? what could it be? tried slowly taking it up same thing happns? thanks

Coilpacks/plugs can be looked at by yourself (takes a bit of time but it's free )
Pull back the rubber of the coil pack to see if there are any cracks in them BUT do it carefully (or you could crack them)
Plugs are easy to check one you've got the packs off,just check the condition of them and that the gap is correct.

with the MAF disconnect with the engine running and it should stall this is by no means a definative test though.
