Default FMIC

Anyone compared tthe autobhan 88 and hybrid, to see if there is any difference in cooling performance of the two and outright power gain?

not compared on same car.. I think the early autobahn was not as effiecent as the hybrid or the newer autobahn.. imho.

know of an autobahn I mapped to 521bhp.. at least I think it was an autobahn core.. will check.

Think I have the early one on my car Simon and I aiming to crack 500bhp, so looks like it might be worth changing the core to a Hybrid. I smell another remap

Funny you should raise this, as I am about to find out. Ever since fitting an Autobahn one a year or two ago, it's been totally on top of charge temps but I've had varying degrees of compressor surge that can't be mapped out on two different turbos. I'd never go back to a top mount, but throttle response is definitely a little more 'elastic'. Anyway, my main concern is the surge that is still slightly there, and I'm convinced it's just not that good a core, although you can't argue with it on value for money.

To cut a long story short, I just sold my Autobahn, and I'm going to try one of Harvey's latest tube and fin Hybrids. I'm sure it will do the biz. Unfortunately I won't be able to do a back to back comparison because I'm rebuilding the whole engine, but throttle response and surge will be the things I'll be keeping an eye on, so in that sense, I should be able to report back. In a few months that is!

If you want to stay with a TMIC get a STi8 one.

the main problem with the aftermarket top mounts if getting the undertray on the bonnet to match up.. any part of the intercooler not getting air through it from the bonnet scoop will be heating etc
also air must be forced through it and not allowed to go over the back of the intercooler

Wouldn't bother with an aftermarket top mount really. You can put the crappiest front mount in and it will do a great job because of where it is. Top mounts have to be really good to work well up there.

As well as looking at temperature control when comparing intercoolers you should also be checking the pressure drop from the turbo to the inlet manifold.
On my STi 3 Wagon at 1.5 bar the pressure drop is .2 bar which is a lot. This is with an STi 8 TMIC.
On my WRX Wagon with the Hybrid GT tube and fin the pressure drop is much less at 1.7 bar but it is so small that I need smaller scale guages to measure it or a guage that measures pressure differences as opposed to two guages that measure individual pressures.
Fitting the STi 8 TMIC to the STi 3 was a big job, bigger by a long way than fitting a Hybrid FMIC and it was also more expensive as you need the TMIC, undertray and scoop.
