I tried to fit a centre section that came off a 99 wagon to my 97 saloon and it was about 2 inches too short, maybe the back box was further back or something

could be that the centre pipe was meant for a sport when he bought it, but my friends wagon was a turbo.
His was a uk model and mines an import tho maybe that also had something to do with it.

Import or uk should make no difference to the center or back pipes. Only worry if you switching between a sport and turbo model scooby.

I asked a similar question about swaping bumpers recently and the answer was they fit fine being swapped either way. However I don't know if they are exactly the same. The reason I mention this is I always assumed they were until I saw an exhaust on RCMS which confused me slightly. It doesn't answer your question but it might be worth an email to RCMS to clarify.
