Synthetics
i was offered a (free!) oil-change today, mobil 1 fully synthetic oil ... sounds good, but i think i read something on here recently about this possibly causing engine failure! whats behind this?
thanks i know nothing about engines!

Here you go m8! Start here! You'll need a good hour. Some of the best techies have posted on these 3 threads. They talk about main bearing failures and then go on to talk about what filter and oil you should use to lower the chances of engine failure.

If you've done over say 5000miles from when the car was new yes.
The two most recommended oils, both fully synthetic are, Castrol RS 10W/60, or Motul 300V 15W/60 with a genuine subaru oil filter. A 0W based oil should not be used because it is considered too thin for the scooby engine. You should fill up the oil filter and apply some oil with your finger around the lip of the filter before fitting. All these steps help lessen the chances of failure.
