Low boost 0.4 bar max??
Hi guys, this is only my second post since becoming the proud owner of a 96 classic 2 litre turbo scooby wagon. It's my first scoob so I'm real new at all this. My friend has a bugeye and he did a service on the car for me when I first got it involving changing the oil, filter, spark plugs and the coolant fluid.
The car has had a manual boost valve fitted bypassing the boost solenoid. Now I have a pillar mount guage displaying the boost levels but all I can get no matter what I do is 0.4 bar which I've been told is too low. Now I have tried adjusting the boost valve but all it does is make the engine cough violently and struggle when it hits about 4.5k revs.
Any ideas at all guys?

Sounds like the car starts misfiring when you're hitting boost. Usual culprits here are spark plugs or coil packs. What spark plugs did you install and were they gapped to 0.7mm? Also have a look at the coil packs (the things that connect to the plugs), if they have any cracks they need replacement.

They were NGK's from Halfords, cost me £39.99 so I assumed they were good. Haven't changed the coil packs, can you recommend some or somewhere I can get some from at a reasonable price? My friend didn't gap the plugs when he fitted them so I might have a go at puling them out and checking them myself.
On another note I've got the lower pipe coming that is required to use the standard boost solenoid, would that fix things maybe? Does anyone know exactly where the lowere pipe from the solenoid actually goes? I also have the standard air box and a green cotton filter to go in to replace the cheap and nasty induction kit thats on it.
Thanks for the advice guys

It came with it attached. I didn't know much about these cars when I went to buy it. It just doesn't seem to do its job so I want to remove it and put it back to standard

A faulty boost controller won't make the engine cough and struggle when coming on boost. Check the spark plug number, recommended is PFR6B and check the coil packs for cracks, however small. After those are out of the way, you can then think of troubleshooting other items if the problem remains.

Well I'll hopefully get it all back to standard tuesday, but I will also check the spark plug types and the gaps on them as I know this wasn't done when they were fitted. I'll try see if I can get a coil pack for it anyway as they are probably a bit old and worn now. Can anyone recommend any for it? Thanks again guys

Well finally got the last bit I needed and fitted a standard air box back into the car with a Green Cotton panel air filter and it runs a whole lot better now. Had to play with the manual boost valve as I think the one in the car is a bit duff but I;m now getting my boost upto 0.9 and it's picking up much better now, I can finally hear the turbo doing its thing.
Just wondering though, when the new plugs were fitted they weren't gapped, will this hurt in any way?
