Default New Engine Or Rebuild ?

Hi,

I have a 1995 imported Impreza WRX.

My local garage have told me they suspect that a knocking noise in the engine indicates problems with the big end conrod bearings. I've had a knocking noise since I purchased the car two years ago, but they have also found traces of metal in the used engine oil.

The garage have suggested that my engine is rebuilt or replaced, but they are not Impreza specialists. I don't have a clue when it comes to mechanical matters so I am not sure what would be the best option. Can anyone offer some help on what I should do next ?

Speak to David at Api on here mate.

API Engines

Job sorted!

It may not be your big ends, but there is a distinct possibility it is! I would get a scooby specialist like the above to see it.

As above defo a specialist, these engines are not the simplest and mistakes can be costly. If your going to tune the engine further, why not take this oppertunity to get a 2.2 forged bottom end with a stroker kit or even a 2.5 forged bottom end. Either way if you plan to run big boost i'd defo get a forged bottom end.

Thanks for the advice. My Impreza is standard apart from the exhaust and I would prefer to keep it that way, plus my budget is limited.

I will follow up with API as they are not far away from me in the Bedford/MK area.

Had my engine rebuilt with them, can highly recommend. Standard rebuild around the £2500 mark.

Steve,
As above for API - they normally have rebuilt WRX/STi engines on the shelf ready to go.
