Big ends gone! Bearing transfer possible?
Hi, my big end bearings got damaged last week. I know someone who can get me an engine very cheaply but it's got worn piston rings.
I'm wondering if it's possible to get the crankshaft and bearings from that engine and put them in my engine. Someone told me it's not possible to just move the bearings, that the engine will still knock but he didn't give a reason why.

It's not a good idea because its a bodge job, both components will be worn in for the engine they are in,start mixing amd matching and something will probably throw its dummy out and break, then you will be back to square one and have already wasted money.

Put it this way a golden rule in engine rebuilds is never re-use old bearings.
For the cost of a bearing set, its not worth it, and the time spent messing about with plastigate to ensure the old bearings don't have excessive clearances just adds to that.
Anyway, from experience an engine with worn piston rings is very likely to have worn bearings as well.
However, as long as the crank and conrods are in good condition and still within manufactuer's tolerances, these can be used with new bearings. So yes, you can use the crankshaft out the other engine. Just not the bearings.

I'd have a word with David at API mate, he'll happily offer advice even if you don't buy anything from him. You need to be VERY careful when rebuilding Scooby engines on the cheap as missing a simple job or scrimping on a small part can bugger up all of your good work. Some parts have to go because debris from the failure will be trapped in them and will only cause another failure if re-used.

What area are you from mate? If its in the South i fully recommend Chris Palmer Auto Services. Just had my engine rebuilt there with a 12month warranty. I'm sure most places only give 6months on a scoob rebuild!!

I'm so far from 'the South', continents away actually, I live in Uganda. Thankfully my mechanic has been able to source a better engine and it's being fitted right now.
