Check the spark plugs first - you will get a ticking noise if they are
not tightened correctly.
If you have a UK spec engine, they have Outer Shim Buckets and with the Service tool - can be done with the engine in the car.
STi have Inner Shim Buckets,so the cams have to come out to reshim.
Some Vers 1 and 2 had Hydraulic Lifters which sludge up over time - cams have to come out to replace/strip and clean the Lifters.

I've got the version 1 wrx, so it sounds like a bit of a major job Gutted, i had the engine rebuilt last year as well. Sods law, why didn't they tap before, i could have had them changed while the engine was out then...Grrrr Its got to be done though, it usually goes away 9 times out of 10, but sometimes taps really bad even when the engine is at full operating temperature.

They are selective shims on the UK and STi,so you will need :
The Service tool to depress the buckets in order to remove the shim.
Micrometer or Vernier gauge to measure the shim.
Somewhere like API for the replacement shims you need.
