Damn ! My gearbox packed in today ! Urgent advice please !!
Hello folks,
Yes, it's true I'm afraid. I was accelerating through a bend in 3rd gear today, perhaps 4500 revs, when I had a sudden loss of power (well, drive !) and heard a grating /rattling noise coming from underneath the car (ie the gearbox). Now I have no drive in 3rd and 4th is tricky. 1st, second and 5th all work, but when the car is in drive I get the rattling noise I've descibed.
The car is a 2001 WRX with 75k miles on the closck and producing 301/290.
So...................
1) Does the fact that one gear has gone suggest a repair may be viable ?
2) I'll check with API, who I've heard are good. What other options do I have if it goes as far as having to buy a second hand gearbox. What do they go for ?
Any advice most welcome at this time of stress !
cheers,
AndytJ

Bugger, and with so little (relatively) power as well... i was hoping my gear box would hold up for a bit more than that
Your options are roughly: recon standard box, upgrade to used sti box (6-sp) (around 2k?) or a ppg gear set (around 3.5k?)
Sorry, can't add anything else of value

Hi Andy,
Bad luck mate.
AFAIK you've got three options:
Rebuild your current box, cost depends on the damage....
Get a recon box (get one with a waranty) I think they can be sourced and fitted for under 1k
OR get a 6 speed, ppg gearset. Much more pricey, but fit and forget option, and no worries about it letting go again, even if you up the power significantly.
Personally if you can afford it, I'd take the 3rd option.
Have a chat with David
All the best,
Paul

Cheers Paul, I may have to go for option 2 because of lack of readies (or Visa limit !). API seem likely at the moment.
My garage suggested I change the clutch at the same time. I could do without spending the money on that - is this simply to save on duplication of labour charges when the clutch finally goes ?

Yep, its a 4 hour job to change a clutch, so quite a big labour charge, if it is worn then you may as well have it done whilst the gearbox is out and save yourself the extra expense. If it's in good nick, there is no point though! Let the garage decide when its there - that's why you need an honest garage!

If they take out the broken box and the clutch is worn out I've got an OEM new bugeye clutch kicking around my garage somewhere.
I bought it and then upped the power and went for an AP item.

I recently stripped 3rd in mine, but luckily I had my old box laying around that I had stripped 2nd gear, 10 hours later rebuilt gearbox ready to go
Stripped 3rd Gear (drive shaft)
Taking good 3rd & 4th off Driven shaft with broken second.
Most expensive part of the rebuild......gearbox oil

as per pm's earlier, either go for a recon box from api who take your knackered on as part ex, or source a decent second hand one from someone reputable like jason (above). would give ebay a miss personally.
oh and as for clutch change... i would. think jase charged me around £220 inc vat for a decent clutch and around £200 to take old gearbox out and replace with new one and clutch.... pretty decent value if you look at whats included... clutch alone is around £150-200 is it not.
you have my number if you wanna natter about it mucker

For a little more than you can buy a dodgy 'freshly imported' one off ebay, you can get API to rebuild yours. If you're planning on doing the rebuild yourself, good on you, otherwise, get it to API.

Must be gearbox breaking time of the year. Did mine again yesturday. The quaife 5 speed gear kit is around 2k plus fitting/vat etc. I may go down this route or I may just sell up and buy a kit car!
