Depending on what year car it is you may be able to pick up another ecu for a couple of quid on ebay. Bought a spare for mine for £15... CHipped that one instead of my original.

If its just to check if its working may be a much cheaper option

What problems you having and what year / model car?

very rarely the ECU that's at fault unless you've shorted something out you shouldn't have.

What is actually the cause of the non starting, no spark or no fuel?

Chattering... check under the drivers dash (get your head in the footwell and look up), have a look for two green plugs, if they are together... pull them apart..

No spark... have you got a signal from the crank sensor (the usual suspect)

Sounds like Cam or Crank sensor failure
