Default changing cylinder head gasket

Mate of mine has a 2.0 legacy(think it's a 97 model). cylinder head gasket is blown(loosing water and white smoke from exhaust)

How easy is this to change?

i've done this on inline fours but not the boxer engine. Any additional complexities? does the engine neeed to come out?

Any info gratefully recieved

Cheers

Engine out, then it'll need a cambelt, plus you'll need to do both heads, and ideally you'll need to fit new cam shaft seals and inlet manifold gaskets, and you'll need some three bond for the rocker cover gaskets.

You would also need to check the heads and block faces for any distortion, otherwise the new gaskets will fail again.
If you have Hydraulic Lifters under the cams, they will need to be stripped and cleaned before refitting.
Give yourself plenty of time to do the job and clean everything 100% - and then you can have the satisfaction of doing a good job yourself.

If you get the heads off and it's not the gasket. Check it's might be cracked cylinder lining. New engine!
