Default Why So Many Rebuilds???

I'm on the lookout for a Type R....looking around piston heads it seems that half the cars have had an engine rebuild...

A lot of them mention its due to an oil pump failure, is this a common issue? Is a rebuild going to happen anyway and its just a case of when?

It's slightly worrying seeing all these engines blowing!

Is it best to look for a car that has already had the engine rebuilt?

Just in the middle of having a rebuild myself. I've not had a diagnosis from the tuners yet, but been informed by others that it was probably due to a high speed run and a lack of oil around the crank shells.

Apparently these engines don't circulate oil very well at higher speeds due to bad sump/oil pickup design and oil pump degradation in higher mileage cars.

If you buy a car thats had an engine rebuild how do can you be sure? Would you be confident in it? Not sure if i would! Unless of course you get a long and comprehensive warranty from a trader.

I think my personal preference in future buys would be

a, pay more for a low mileage car,
b, look for a cheap and clean example and budget the difference on a bottom end rebuild.

Yeah I'm on the lookout for a low milage example...

Is there any preventative mesaures that can be taken to prevent a blown engine? Replacing the oil pump?

Thanks.

well looked after they will last, even tuned, but all it could take is one part to fail and its all gone wrong.

mates lasted 140,000km before he wrote it off, drove it like he stole it but looked after it.

another mates lasted 45,000miles, oil pump failed and bang went engine.

its just luck of the draw.

look after it, regular services, warm it up before thrashing it, cool it down before switching it off, regular oil changes and it'll be as reliable as any car

Mapping for the correct fuel will also greatly help and extended high speed runs on a tmic are a no no!

Many imports, especially he 99/00s, go bang as they were inteneded to be run on 100 octane fuel and ended up on UK 97 SUL. If they're remapped for UK fuel this isn't a problem. Also, those MYs had notoriously fragile mafs which would have accounted for quite a few casualties no doubt. Same story with UK cars in the latter respect.

my p1 had 3 engines under warranty, all they done is replace bottom ends, so when it done it again i done the job myself, crank regrind, acl racing bearings, uprated oil pump, lets see how long this one lasts! 92k at the mo, hope it makes 100k. oh and at the mo it's getting on my nerves as it's running like poo, went to subaru's today and they put it on their machine, it said everything is perfect, they recon idle control unit, £300, wanna no for sure before i spend that
