which panel filter?
i am using the sti panel filter and its great... the car breathes a lot better than it did, especially past 6000rpm and i have found myself hitting the limiter(8250) a lot of times, when before the panel filter the car struggled after 7000rpm..(JDM sti)
I'm using a KN, I have had no problems with it. It gave good results on a recent mapping session. As above or a 'Green' filter all will give similar performance. The KN can be reused after a light oiling so in the end would save money. The choice is yours.
my maper told me to remove my k&n. as it had alredy brocken 1 maf and second 1 went as the re map was taking place. OE one in place now imho waste of money and break mafs and maper said not much to gain at all but each to there own
two maf sensors £90 each K&n filter £35 each K&N now in the bin pricless

My Maf was still the original one fitted in 1999! It showed no signs of being damaged by my KN. It was replace by Bob Rawle last week as a precaution when my car was being mapped. He didn't comment on it and certainly didn't ask me to remove it. Who mapped yours?

not going to name names as will be doing business with him again but i feel beter knowing oil will not be fouling my maf any more and its a part that when fooked will knack an engin up so but like i say each to there own
LOL OK
I think that Maf's do sometimes get damaged while changing the actual filter. Being a bit heavy handed can damaged the fragile wire. The most important thing IMHO is not to over oil it when re-charging the filter, a process made easier now the oil comes in an aerosol.

over oiling is a big no no
but too little is just as bad its a fine line you might say. suppose the sti ones would be a good one to go for as lets face it sti made it and look what they can come up with

I have an STI filter fitted and have to say its the best one so far, I have to agree the car feels like she can breathe a lot better and you dont get that rough induction sound too badly either.....
I know there not a very cost effective item to have but I kinda feel good knowing its a performance (ish) item made by Subaru for Subaru's rather than an aftermarket jobbie...... personal preference I guess at the end of the day.

the thing is, that at the test iirc they tested the panel filters on a wrx or an sti but either way it wasnt a jdm one... this filters i believe where designed for the jdm cars, and therefore would perform good only on them , as their engines are quite different from eudm or usdm ones...
Well as for over 'oiling', just buy a new one, it solves that problems straight away. I got the 'new' TSL green filter again this time, they changed the weave for a blue one or someat, it obviously goes quicker cus it is blue!
I dont see the point in scrimping on money to re-oil it when i can get a new one sorted in a day and it will last a while again.
