Tuning Advise please!!
Hi there, pretty new to the scooby's, need some tuning advise, ive got a 01 impreza wrx which i would like to get more power out of, currently has s/s decat, middle and rear exhaust, sti top mount intercooler and baileys bov, would like some advise on whats best for power next? was thinking sti pink injectors and a td05 turbo? is this the right way or should i take a different approach? any ideas??
Yea cold air feed sounds good, any certain brands to look out for? would like to be around the 300bhp mark really, would the standard engine be ok if i replaced the turbo or would i be putting 2 much strain on it?
upto 330 bhp will be fine for your internals and transmission
consider a TD04H from andy forrest , like yours but the hybrid version, works very well by all acounts , or a vf34/35 or TD05/16g
deffo fuel pump ,panel filter (STi or green) and remap as well though

nicked from andys website
290-310 bhp
Full Decat or Sportscat exhaust from turbo back 2.5 or 3” bore.
Decat uppipe Pre turbo
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
K+N panel filter
Ecutek Custom ECU recalibration
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
AFP 04-H custom ported hybrid turbo
High Flow multi spray fuel injectors 550cc (380cc as std)
Uprated turbo to intercooler 'Y' pipe
NGK PFR 7B uprated spark plugs
300-320 bhp
Substitute VF34/35 or TD05-16G turbo in place of AFP04H for additional 10-20bhp but with slightly later turbo spool up.

IMHO you can't beat the VF34 for bang for buck performance..
With the mods listed above substitute the uppipe only for a set of Lateral Performance or Roger Clark tubular headers , pop a front mount on with a CAIK and you should see 340 - 360 bhp....

From a 2004 car but you get the picture....
Previous graph from the same car on a stock TD04 which listed our chosen mods...

Is the front mount really necessary if he has an STI8 TMIC already? Especially considering most FMIC's I've seen so far require cutting of the crash impact bar at the front?
I've got a FMIC on my WRX, but I'm going back to an STI TMIC this year (350 odd bhp on a td05-20g), due to the fact that the car now doesn't feel as stiff at the front end (with the cut bar) and the fact that in an impact the bar may well save the passengers / engine.

Re Crash bar, we've had an improved version made, using two square box sections welded together. It gives room for the FMIC, but still bolts stiffly across the front, doubling up as a hanger for the intercooler.

Ideal
I still use an Sti TMIC on my 2.5 Sti RA with a 321T running over 450bhp.
That includes track use, 20 laps of knockhill the other weekend and it was fine.

unfortunatly often the undertray is less efficent at sealing air flow through the intercooler once the tmic is changed and it works no better and sometimes worse than the sti8 intercooler which is very good.

IIRC the Hyper Flow TMIC has not got any bigger surface area but deeper/taller and with a little gentle trimming of the undertray seal to accomadate the deeper/taller I/C, works better than the STi8 I/C. The internal machining/design on the Hyper Flow is better than the STi8 allowing the Hyper Flow to, err, flow better than the STi8 and the Hyper Flow has Welded tank ends, not crimped like the STi8 I/C, so can handle more boost if your turbo can make it
STi8 I/C is a great top mount intercooler dont get me wrong, but IMO its not the best.
APS TMIC has a lot larger surface area, which as Simon says, is useless when the seal on the under tray stops air getting to the extra surface area.
