Depends what you want from it.
For modifying, I'd try and find an MY99/00 thats already been remapped thus saving you around £700. Try and find one around 260-270bhp as it will already have all the expensive parts fitted and the'box/clutch wont have been put under too much stress. Plus people who have spent this kind of money on their cars are likely to have serviced them well and looked after them.
Subaru : 1999 Subaru Impreza 295BHP
High mileage I know, but if you look around you may be able to pick up something like this withn 80/90k
Make sure tyres are ok,as you'll need 4 when you do, brakes are ok especially if its uprated discs,no knock from bottom end especially on start up. Has timing belt been changed? Ask for receipt as it will cost a few hundred quid for belt/rollers etc. Plugs will last for 40k. Oil should be changed every 6k.

When viewing a car , plug in the green and black wires under the dash and switch on ignition. Watch for the 'CHECK ENGINE' light flashing. That will tell you if and sensors are faulty, providing the owner hasnt changed the sensor and not reset the ECU.
