You will need to remove a cam and see what is below, if its an RA it should have solid tappets with shims like this

The shims are pretty hard to get now

If they have a oval coil hole, you can remove the valve covers and see if the tappets are "solid". On a WRX you can clearly see the shim.

V3-V4 STi heads should look like this when you have the valve cover off

If they have a square coil hole like this, you need to take out a lifter to see if they are V2 STi RA.

If the lifters look like this, RUN

Cheers

Chris,
STi Version 2 RA valve codes are,
INKO + EXKO
As mentioned above it will have Top Hat Inner Shims and also Green colour coded Valve Springs.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm about to pull my heads apart. Is that thing where it says 'If they look like this, run', a hydraulic lash adjuster off an early WRX head?
